In memory of

章馮貽燕夫人Yee Yin Fung Cheung

May 29, 1936 -  March 22, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Mrs. Yee Yin Fung Cheung 章馮貽燕夫人, on March 22, 2024 at the age of 87. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family.

Born to Shiu Sum Fung 馮紹森 and Po Tuen Lo 盧保端 in Hong Kong on May 29, 1936, Yee Yin was the second of 4 children and the only daughter. She spent her early years playing in the Lo family home and garden in Macau. When war broke out in 1941, she hid with her family in the bomb shelter in Hong Kong that her paternal grandfather had the foresight to build many years prior. That bomb shelter saved many lives during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong in World War II.

Yee Yin was home-schooled with her brothers in traditional Chinese teachings卜卜齋 from a very young age. After the war, she studied at Chun Kwong Primary School 真光小學 and St. Stephen’s Girls’ College 聖士提反女子中學. She attended the University of Hong Kong 香港大學 and completed her bachelor’s degree and an Advanced Diploma in Education. She married Dr. Che Sun Cheung 章志新醫生 on November 27, 1961. She worked as a teacher from 1959 until 1963, when she welcomed her first child. She devoted her life to raising her three children and looking after her parents and her husband. Family was the centre of her life.

In 1986, she and her husband immigrated to Canada to secure a better future for their family. They bought a piece of land outside of Toronto, and she designed and oversaw the building of their house. Over the years, she would spend time in Hong Kong and Canada. When in Canada, she would participate in the lives of her grandchildren, picking them up from school and attending grandparents’ days. She had a strong sense of Chinese heritage and family traditions, which she passed down to her children and grandchildren.

Yee Yin was very artistic and creative. She played the piano, was skilled in Chinese calligraphy and Chinese painting, and learned from Ling Nan Style 嶺南畫派 Master Chiu 趙少昂老師. She enjoyed getting together with friends and family, going out for dim sum, and hosting large dinner parties at home. She was a talented cook who excelled at creating delicious and inventive new dishes with fresh ingredients. The multi-layered New Year almond cake was one of her family’s favourites.

Yee Yin leaves behind her 3 children: Angela (Stephen), Elaine and Hans (Josephine) and 5 grandchildren Jonathan, Matthew, Sabrina, Valerie and Veronica, and many sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her family and friends.

In lieu of sending flowers, donations may be made to Women's College Hospital (https://wchf.akaraisin.com/ui/YeeYinFungCheung) or Hill House Hospice (https://hillhousehospice.com/cheung) in recognition of the excellent care that she received from Drs. Savannah Cardew and Chin K. Chung, respectively.
