Winnie Yuet-Wan Wong

January 29, 1964 -  February 5, 2023

It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Winnie Yuet-Wan Wong following a courageous battle with lung cancer, on Sunday, February 5, 2023, age 59, at home with her husband, Bruce Marshall, by her side. Winnie is the beloved mother of Liza and Ella, daughter of Sam (deceased) and Wai-Fong, sister of Barbara and husband Andrew, and Daniel (deceased) and wife Flora. Daughter-in-law of Bob and Lois Marshall, sister-in-law of Sean and wife Kalpana, and Philip and wife Melodie. Dear aunt of Benny, Dennis, Melissa, Nisha, Milun, Cole and Brayden and great-aunt of Derek, Kristen, Curtis, Ryan, Evan, Cam, Aidan and Charissa.

Winnie was born on January 29, 1964 in Hong Kong and moved to Canada with her family at age 3. She grew up in Brockville Ontario where she attended Westminster Public School and Thousand Islands Secondary School. Winnie is a graduate of York University with a degree in Economics and Mass Communications. She began her career in Australia and the UK, facilitating worldwide re-branding for BP Oil. Over the next two decades Winnie succeeded in brand management for companies such as Procter & Gamble, Swiss Army and Eddie Bauer, luxury goods retail with Holt Renfrew, and commercial real estate and customer experience for Cadillac Fairview. Most recently, she was Head of Marketing for International Franchising Inc., an entity of Serruya Private Equity (YogenFruz). Of late, Winnie also shared her vast experience and knowledge as a marketing instructor at Seneca College. Her upbeat personality and consummate professionalism are remembered fondly by her colleagues.

Winnie loved to explore different cultures and traveled extensively in Asia and Europe. She was also a devoted mother, always very involved in her daughter’s activities, whether driving to skating lessons or being there to support at school events or recitals. Family and friends played a large part in Winnie’s life and she was well known for being at the centre of her numerous friend groups – once you were Winnie’s friend you were a friend for life. Winnie will be missed for her smile that could light up a room, her infectious laugh, her kindness and the love she freely shared.

As a memorial to Winnie, we prefer that donations be made to the Lung Health Foundation or Lung Cancer Canada; see the donations tab on this site.
If sending flowers please ensure they arrive at the Funeral Home before 5 pm on Friday February 10th.

I worked with Winnie for several years at Markville (shopping centre). Those were fun days where we both achieved personal success and an enduring friendship that lasted past our working period. Winnie was a consummate professional and loyal friend. On a few occasions I had the opportunity to spend time with her and her husband Bruce and found the source of her wonderful humour: a loving husband with at the time two very young girls that were testing their energy but never their love for them. Winnie had a laugh that was constant and distinctive. You could hear her long before you could see her. For such a petite woman it was quite remarkable. She always found strength to fight through all the challenges put in front of her with a grace that was distinctively Winnie. Although truly heartbroken for her and her family I am relieved her time for rest has come. My thoughts and prayers are with you Bruce, Liza and Ella and family. My hope is this deep sadness for your loss will be interrupted often with happy memories of better times with your wife and mother.

I met Winnie at a TTC bus stop on our way to our first day at York University. We were both excited to meet someone — especially another out-of-towner — before stepping foot onto the huge campus in a big unfamiliar city. We quickly became friends, eventually taking some of the same classes and partnering on projects. I recall our frustration and Winnie’s infectious laughter as we learned to manoeuvre this strange new device called a computer mouse, before having to demonstrate its use to the entire class! Her intelligence, creativity and supreme organizational skills were always impressive. I’m so grateful that our friendship grew through our school years, travel, career moves, marriages, children and more, including countless Tuesday evenings spent enjoying new restaurants and arthouse films when we were single! It was wonderful to continue sharing laughter-filled get togethers as our families grew. Unfortunately as our schedules grew busier, we met less frequently. I’m heartbroken that we won’t enjoy more adventures together and will forever cherish the memories of the ones we had.

My family and I send our deepest condolences to Bruce, Liza and Ella, and to all her family members and friends who are missing our dear Winnie.
