In memory of

William James Foreman

April 5, 1930 -  July 8, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William “Bill” Foreman, warmly known as “Red” to many. Bill passed peacefully, July 8, 2025, at Fairview Lodge LTC, Whitby, at the age of 95.

Bill was a devoted husband of 74 years to the love of his life and best friend, Joyce (Kilburn). The loving and patient father of Gary (Peggy), Laurie (deceased) (Phil, deceased), Scott (Sherri), and Shelley (Michael, deceased). Bill cherished his role as Grampa to Mike (Tania), Steve (Laurie), Andrew, Meagan (Chris), and Jennifer, and was also the proud Great-Grampa to Pela, Mikah, Henry, and Eric. He will be fondly remembered by his brother-in-law, Jack Kilburn (Beverly), and by his nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his parents, Annie and Duncan, and his brother, Jack.

As a child, he grew up in Oshawa and spent his summers in Collingwood with his beloved Aunt Kate. At just 16, Bill started on the boys’ line at General Motors, became a full-time employee at 18, and went on to enjoy a fulfilling 37.7-year career, retiring as a General Supervisor on August 1, 1986. After retiring, Bill and Joyce enjoyed spending winters in Florida and travelling to many places around the world. Summers were spent at their cottage on Balsam Lake, where they loved gathering with family. Hosting their annual family reunion became a cherished tradition—always guided by the belief that “the more, the merrier.”

Bill was passionate about helping others and dedicated much of his life to giving back to his community. As an active member of GM Retirees for many years, he assisted with golf tournaments and prepared newsletters for mailing. He also devoted many years to volunteer work with organizations including the Durham Distress Centre, where he answered a 24-hour support line; the Sydenham Kiwanis Club (30 years), where he received the “Legion of Honour” award in 2015; Lakeridge Health Oshawa (21 years), where he worked early morning shifts at the hospital coffee kiosk; Simcoe Street United Church, where he was an active member and board steward; and Bereaved Families of Ontario – Durham Region, following the loss of his daughter Laurie.

A true gentleman with a heart of gold, there are countless individuals in Oshawa, Durham region and beyond, whose lives have been touched by Bill’s warmth and generosity. He will be deeply missed, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to Bereaved Families of Ontario – Durham Region (905-579-4293) or Kingsview United Church, Oshawa (905-436-2000)

As a cottage neighbor we always looked forward to seating beside Bill at the many Balsam Lake extended family functions to hear his many stories and jokes. Always the guy with the big smile, kind heart and the serious family man. One of the good ones now surely to be missed by many. Our condolences go out to the family.

Scotty Foreman and I met in grade 9 in high school. I was 13 years old and we became the best of friends through that time. I met Bill and Joyce Foreman or as I called them always Mr. and Mrs. Foreman. They were like second parents to me during my hectic and troubled teenage and young adult years. They opened their house to me many times and gave their love and caring to me always. My life would not have been the same, had it not been for Mr. and Mrs. Foreman and they’re amazing son Scott. Some years ago I had cancer and was going through treatments at Oshawa General Hospital and it made my day every time I went there to see Mr. Foreman with a big smile, and “ Hi Lizzie, how are you feeling, sweetheart?”
He never failed to make my day a little bit brighter. I may not have seen you as often in the last years, but you have and Mrs. Foreman have always and forever held the special place in my heart and you always will. I love you with all my heart Mr. Foreman may you rest in peace.
