October 21, 1926 -
March 4, 2018
William (Bill) Ernest Lardner, 91, passed away on Sunday March 4, 2018 in Marco Island, Florida while walking joyfully in the sun admiring antique cars with his daughter Janice, and companion Wendy. Bill and his late wife Ruth met in 1945 at a dance while they were both serving in the British Army. They emigrated to Canada from England in 1952, starting in Ottawa where he and Ruth began their family. They moved to Toronto in 1953. An accomplished engineer graduating from the University of Birmingham in 1952, Bill co-founded Deep Foundations Contractors Inc in 1971 with Dave Miller Sr. (deceased). He was a prominent figure in the engineering community, and was awarded the Canadian Geotechnical Society’s G. Geoffrey Meyerhof Award for his outstanding contribution to soil mechanics and foundation engineering. Throughout his career and retirement, Bill pioneered advancements in the field and supported the next generation of engineers through grant programs at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Birmingham, England. Bill was a curious, driven, generous family man who enjoyed rousing his family in song and engaging them in debates. He has left behind an incredible legacy and will be sorely missed by his community, his friends, and his family; sister Margaret (late Phillip); children Rychard (Janet), Janice (late Jack), Ande (late Marlene), Claire (Cris); grandchildren Thomas (Katie), William (Cindy), Michael (Emily), Alex (Chad), Samantha, Leane, Sage, late Jae, and; great-grandchildren Ewan, Benjamin, Elias, and Theodore. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 17th, 2018 from 1-4pm at the Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Rd, (east gate entrance), Toronto, ON. Celebration of Life will be on Sunday, June 10th, 2018 from 2-4pm at the Donalda Club, 12 Bushbury Dr, Toronto ON . In lieu of flowers, Bill would like you to support the Scott Mission of Toronto, The Salvation Army of Toronto, The Scarborough Hospital Foundation and the North York General Hospital in his name.
