In memory of

Wanil Song

September 1, 1933 -  July 16, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wanil Song on Saturday July 16, 2022. Wanil was born in Jangsoo, Jeollabukdo, Korea on September 1, 1933. He is survived by his older brother Yanghyun, younger sister Soonduk and younger brother Chungil. His three children Helen (Lap), Robert (Yeonsu), Jully (Brad), seven grandchildren (Nicole, Sara, Jack, Jaime, Heather, Daniel and Phoebe) and his loving wife, Hyung Ja will miss him greatly.

Through sheer courage and ambition, Wanil left his small mountain village for Jeonju city to get an education. He attended Jeonju high school and later Dongkuk University in Seoul where he studied agriculture. This led to a government job through which he and his team was sent to Canada (University of Guelph) with the purpose of purchasing cows for Korea. There he fell in love with Canada and vowed to emigrate with his family. In 1972 his dream came true, Wanil arrived in Falmouth, Nova Scotia with his young family to work at his sponsors greenhouse business. After a few years the desire to be near other Koreans prompted a move to Ontario starting in London and eventually Toronto. He pursued many jobs to provide for his family, including work in many factories, service stations (studied auto mechanics at Fanshaw College), becoming a business owner/operator of a convenience store, sandwich shop and coffee shop before retiring.

Nothing brought him more joy than a game of golf with friends, politics, and community service. He was deeply committed to the democracy movement and re-unification issues in Korea. He always made time to show up and cheer on his grandchildren at their sporting events.

We will miss 'Haraboji' at our many family gatherings and celebrations, especially his rare smile which lit up his handsome face.
Thank you for everything 'Haraboji'. WE LOVE YOU AND WILL MISS YOU
