March 30, 2024
WONG, Wai Chee (周黃惠慈) - Our beloved mother and grandmother. At the age of 92 and surrounded by all her children and grandchildren, Wai Chee passed away peacefully on March 30, 2024, after a beautiful life filled with the love of her family.
Wai Chee was born in Canton, China on January 3, 1932. Raised by her dedicated mom, she grew up happily in Hong Kong together with her sister Wai Yee. She married her husband Man Kwong CHOW in 1959 and they had a loving marriage for over 50 years together. Wai Chee is survived by her family: children Patrick, Suzanne (Gary), Michael (Fanny); grandchildren Michael (Melody), Ian, Michelle, Kelvin, Samantha.
She met Man Kwong while they were both working at Pfizer. One year after their wedding, Wai Chee gave birth to Patrick and Suzanne in 1960, and Michael in 1961. She was always so proud since she miraculously had 3 kids in two years! They eventually followed their children to Canada in 1994 where they lived in Scarborough. Their life was filled with lots of home-cooked food, mahjong, and lively gatherings with friends and family. She tirelessly supported Man Kwong through two fights with cancer and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary together in 2009 with all their family and friends. Despite her love and care, she was heart-broken when her beloved husband passed away in 2010.
Wai Chee always put her family as her priority. She loved to make food for her loved ones and we will always remember the taste of her cooking - soy sauce chicken, plum sauce duck, wonton, spring rolls, her delicious soup. Wai Chee loved and spoiled her grandchildren dearly and they adored her. 乖嫲嫲好婆婆 was how they greeted her. Her home was often filled with the sound of mahjong tiles as she happily hosted her friends generously. She also loved to go to the casino and we had so many fun outings with her, and she would usually win and treat us to dinner afterwards! Everybody always remember Wai Chee’s beautiful smiles, kindness and generosity.
Wai Chee lived very independently until 11 days before her admission to Markham Stouffville Hospital. During that 11 days, her children and grandchildren kept her company 24/7 while she fought with her deteriorating lung condition. We are warmed to know that she has joined her beloved husband in heaven and we invite you to join our family in remembering Wai Chee's life. In memory of Wai Chee, donations can be made to Markham Stouffville Hospital and the link is in the Donations tab.
