In memory of

Victor Eulogio Rodriguez

February 13, 1935 -  June 4, 2021

Dr. Victor E. Rodriguez passed peacefully on June 4th at the age of 86 and is survived by his wife Olga, son Dimitrio, daughter Tatiana, daughter-in-law Anna, son-in-law Michael and four grandchildren. Victor was born and raised in the farmlands of Santa Sofia, Colombia with his three brothers, Alberto, Alfonso and Aquiles, and his two sisters Himelda and Carmenza. He graduated from Universidad Nacional de Colombia, after which he practiced dentistry in several Latin American countries. At the age of 34, Victor moved to Canada, where he would meet his wife in English class, to whom he was lovingly married for 51 years. Throughout their years together they shared a strong emotional bond, travelling the world, embracing Olga’s Greek heritage, and starting a family. They were best friends. Even as Victor’s health declined during his last years, Olga was always his anchor, as she cared for him throughout this difficult time.

Victor was a very devoted father. Almost daily, he would drive the kids and their friends to school or wherever they needed to go. He would spend evenings helping them with their studies and weekends getting to know their friends. Regular family outings and travel were the very fabric of his existence. Spending time with his children was an integral part of his everyday life. He celebrated his children’s graduations and marriages -- always being among the first on the dance floor. He also enjoyed spending as much time possible with his 4 grandchildren. Through the World Vision Foundation, for over ten years, he sponsored 18 children in need from underdeveloped countries in Africa and Latin America. He took pride in helping children with their education and life’s necessities for a chance at a better future.

Victor established two successful dental practices in Toronto and Mississauga, making many life-long friends. He worked for over 45 years as a dentist in private practice and during that time for 22 years in a school-based practice. He was respected for his commitment to the excellence of his craft and treatment of others, with many of his employees staying with him throughout the years. He was recognized by the Ontario Dental Association with a 50 Year Honorary Award.

Victor will be remembered by family and friends for his infectious humor, calm and warmth that he brought to their lives. As a child he was known by his siblings as "Tetakeo"-- the name of the town ventriloquist’s puppet -- for his mischievous and fun ways. Throughout his life he carried that light fun and humour into his everyday relationships, making people’s lives fuller and warmer. Even in his last months, he enjoyed making jokes with his wife and nurses. At the same time, he had an admirable ability to let the dramas and hardships of life roll off him. This made him fearless -- whether coming to Canada alone to start a new life, going down the tallest waterslide in a Florida water park, and even in his approach to death. He showed us what to hold onto in life and what to let go of. He will be greatly missed!

I knew Mr. Rodriguez or “Victor”, as Dimitri used to say. Growing up in my teens with Dimi, I have fond memories of a calm, wise and humorous man. His passing touches me as it closes a chapter of my memorable years spent at the Rodriguez household.
