Venita "Vern" Smith

Sunrise: August 4, 1941 ♥ Sunset: April 12, 2025

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our cherished Venita “Vern” Smith, who departed this life peacefully at the age of 83.

Born and raised in Morne Jaloux, St. George’s, Grenada, and a long-time resident of Brampton, Ontario, Canada, Venita was a beacon of love, resilience, and pride. Deeply rooted in both her homeland and adopted country, she stood tall as a pillar of strength and compassion. Her enduring hard work, thoughtfulness, and dedication to family and community leave behind a legacy that will be remembered and treasured by many.

She is survived by a devoted and far-reaching family across Canada, Grenada, and the United States. Her cherished children, Gracelyn Seedu and Joslyn Smith, continue to carry her legacy, as do her beloved stepchildren, Elvis Fraser and Clarence Smith.

She was a proud and loving grandmother to Jennifer Seedu, Jacob Seedu, Jesse Smith, and Jordan Smith. She also leaves behind her son-in-law, Jack Seedu, and daughter-in-law, Allison Bain-Smith. She is mourned by her dear brothers, Jude Celestine and Clement Celestine; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Ancilla Smith, Valerie Celestine, Oliver Mitchell, and Ann Smith.

Her extended family includes a host of loving nieces and nephews—Albert, Dyran, Eric, Erica, Cherry-Ann, Rene, Troy, Alice-Ann, Barbara, Kim, Gabriel, Carol, Patricia, Nigel, Marilyn, Valda, Ian, Jillian, Judana, Valencia, Joshua, Ché, Jason, Ashley, and Jennifer—and she was a treasured great-aunt to many more. She will be dearly missed by her cherished cousins, relatives, and friends spanning the families of Celestine, Smith, Bruno, Nathan, Parks, Mitchell, Philip, Bain, and Theadore, with roots and memories across Morne Jaloux, Laborie, Lance Aux Epines, Paddock, Saint Paul’s, Madigras, and Grand Anse, as well as the Seedu families in Pickering, Toronto, and Saskatoon. Also mourning her loss are beloved neighbours, friends like Sue, Janet, and Sharon, along with past colleagues from her years in Brampton and Toronto, who will remember her kindness, strength, and enduring spirit.

She is now reunited in eternal peace with her loving parents, Edward and Agatha Celestine, her dear husband Isiah “Smithy” Smith, her beloved daughter Roslyn Smith, and her siblings Stella, June, Norma, and Godric Celestine. She also joins the company of beloved ancestors, relatives, and friends, including fellow founding committee members of the Grenadian Maurice Bishop International Airport, whose shared efforts helped shape a part of the nation's history.

Venita was known for her unwavering kindness, her passion for her heritage, her brilliance, and the deep love she shared with everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her warm presence, radiant smile, and steadfast faith were sources of comfort and joy to all, and though she may no longer walk beside us, she will forever remain in our hearts.

May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Auntie Vern..May your soul rest in Peace.
Recalling the days of spending time at your home at Lance Aux Epines as a young boy ...and was privileged to have visited "We Tent" Calypsoe Tent at the "Dome" in Grand Anse.....I could confess now, that was the only Calypsoe Tent I have ever visited in my Entire Life as a Grenadian!
I remembered your tasty hand with your Pelau
and you always was a proponent fir using bush-teas on evenings(Black sage).Whenever you visited us in Morne Jaloux .there was always a buzz and excitement as you made us feel loved..
Crocheting was a life-long passion..Remember the Swans with the Red Beaks!!
We will not forget the suitcase of books you left us when you migrated to Canada...The provided excellent study aids in our secondary school days.
I will not forget your lovely penmanship when exchanging letters existed via the Post.
We would gather at Mummy's feet and listened as Mummy read aloud you well scripted monologues...Well it was just you and Uncle Goderick who wrote anyway....On behalf of my Wife Antonia,Rayne,Renel and Renaldo we express our Condolences to Grace, Joslyn and their family and friends
