In memory of

Vassiliki Kounavis

October 2, 1931 -  July 27, 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Vassiliki Kounavis (Zissimopoulou). Known affectionately, to most relatives as “Vaso” and Yia Yia to her beloved grandchildren that she adored, and “Bessie” to most of her friends.

Our beloved mother passed away on July 27th, 2024, with her son John by her side. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Andreas, as well as her parents, Yianni and Eleni, and her Sister Fotini.
Vassiliki is survived by her children, George(Monica), John (Nicole), her grandchildren, Andreas and Alexia.

Born in southern Greece, Agio. Vassiliki was a very loving, compassionate, affectionate, wise, resilient, strong, strong minded, courageous, generous, and hard working person who provided until the end of her journey. She had boundless energy. She was a very talented seamstress, and had an eye for fashion. She enjoyed her garden, and planted beautiful flowers and vegetables, and loved to cook and bake delicious meals, cakes and pastries Her family was extremely important to her.

Vassiliki eventually met the love of her life, her husband Andreas. Not long after they married, they moved from Greece to Belgium. They stayed one year before moving to Germany, where they had their first son, George.
After two years in Germany, they moved to Toronto, Canada, due to the recommendation from her cousin.

Vassiliki and her husband Andreas, together succeeded and built a beautiful loving life together in Canada. Some years later they had their second son, John. Which brought great joy to Vassiliki, her husband, and their son, George.

Years later, Vassiliki, unfortunately lost her husband, Andreas, who passed away at the young age of 44, leaving her behind to raise her two young sons. She managed to provide her sons with all the love, compassion, and affection that they emotionally needed. Vassiliki kept working hard to provide everything that they needed and wanted, while still providing them every day with home cooked meals, a clean home, and her presence and guidance.

We are all beyond grateful to have had such a beautiful mother and grandmother. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of meeting and knowing her.

To my super mom, Manoula(Mommy), I love you. You were the best Mom a son could ever ask for. I am thankful and appreciate for everything that you have done for us, I will miss you dearly.
Your memory will live in our hearts forever.

No flower is forgotten because it dies. Most often what is remembered is the beauty and fragrance emitted while it blossomed and bloomed. Such indeed will be the inedible memories of your dearest Mom. May her soul rest in peace and the rest of us find comfort in her fondest memories. Wishing the entire family peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever hold in your hearts.

Theia Vaso was always so loving—each memory I have of her is one where i hear her laughing, or speaking with affection and care. I also have fond memories of the love she and theio Andreas shared—they modeled a beautiful partnership that is etched in my heart. My love to all of you. I will light a candle in her memory on the east coast of canada, and send a prayer out onto the ocean.
