Valerie Deanne Closson

February 13, 1972 -  June 13, 2023

Valerie Deanne Closson passed away on June 13, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. Surrounded lovingly by her family at Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, Val’s spirit now rests peacefully, leaving behind cherished memories and a profound legacy.

Val was born on February 13, 1972, to Eldon and Mary-Ellen (McFaul) Closson in the picturesque town of Ameliasburgh, Prince Edward County. She grew up in a close-knit family that instilled in her the values of love, compassion, and strength. Val will be dearly missed by her parents, Eldon and Mary-Ellen, who will forever cherish the precious moments they shared with their daughter.

Val was the loving wife of Derrick Tong, who was a source of unwavering support and affection to her. Together, they built a beautiful life in Toronto centred around their two daughters, Sophia and Chloe Tong. Val’s devotion to her role as a mother was unparalleled, and her love and guidance will forever shape the lives of her daughters. She leaves behind a lasting imprint on their hearts.

In addition to her immediate family, Val will be dearly missed by her brother, Craig Closson, sister-in-law Lynne Closson, and nephews Dante and Dominic. The bonds they shared were filled with laughter, love, and a deep connection that will continue to be cherished. Valerie's extended family, including numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, will always hold her memory close, as she brought joy and warmth to their lives.

Val was a treasured friend to many, offering unwavering support, encouragement, and a listening ear. Her genuine kindness, compassion, wit and zest for life endeared her to a large group of friends who will forever be grateful for her friendship. Throughout her lifetime she acquired many close-knit groups of friends from high school, the University of Guelph, England, Australia, and within her Don Mills Neighborhood. Val’s legacy of love, humour and empathy will continue to be remembered by those fortunate enough to have known her.

Among her passions, Val had a deep love for horses and horseback riding, finding solace and joy in their presence. Through her love of horses and her own horse Sunny, Val discovered a deep appreciation for the beauty and serenity of nature.

Val's commitment to lifelong learning led her to graduate with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Gerontology from the University of Guelph. Val also returned to school to earn a Bachelor of Science at the University of Toronto. She dedicated her professional career to engaged service and the betterment of others, embodying the qualities of kindness and compassion in her work. Val's impact on the lives she touched will continue to ripple through the lives of those she helped.

Val's memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her legacy of kindness, compassion, hilarity and zest for life will be carried forward as a guiding light for all. Though she may be physically absent, her spirit will remain an everlasting presence, inspiring us to live each day with love, grace, and resilience.
