In memory of

Valentins Vilmanis

January 30, 1935 -  February 16, 2025

Valentins Vilmanis, born January 30, 1935, in Kalvene, Latvia, passed away peacefully at his home in Toronto, on February 16, 2025. He was predeceased by his wife, Mara Vilmanis (née Vorps), who passed away on February 27, 2012. He was the son of Fricis Vilmanis and Alise (née Brumaks) Vilmanis. The eldest of four children, Valentins was the last surviving sibling, predeceased by his oldest brother, Gunars Vilmanis, his sister, Silvija Vilmanis Hudson, and his youngest brother, Janis Vilmanis.

In 1944, amidst the turmoil of World War II, Valentins and his family fled Latvia, finding refuge in a displaced persons camp in Germany until 1949. Their journey for a new home led them to Argentina, where they resided until 1957. That year, they immigrated to Canada, arriving at Pearson Airport and settling in Toronto where Valentins would build his life.

He met Mara through the Toronto Latvian community, whom he married on June 16, 1972. Together, they welcomed two daughters, Kristina (and husband, Andrew Moore, with children Ian and Zoe) and Anita (and husband, Michael Bakker, with children Tristan and Luke).

Valentins enjoyed a long career as a carpenter, contributing to numerous projects throughout Toronto and the GTA. In his leisure time, he pursued his passion for woodworking around the house. He cherished his time at the family cottage in French River, where he found solace in nature, tending to the gardens, maintaining the property, barbequing, boating, and fishing. He loved animals and over the years had many pets. His cats and dogs held a special place in his heart.

Following their retirement, Valentins and Mara relocated to Innisfill, Ontario, where they lived for ten years before returning to Toronto in 2011 to be closer to their family. Shortly after their return, Mara passed away in 2012. His daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren, and pets provided unwavering love and support to Valentins during this difficult time. After a lengthy hospitalization beginning in 2023, Valentins' daughters honored his wish to remain at home, providing him with compassionate care until his passing.

Valentins’ life was marked by resilience and strength, overcoming the challenges of war, immigration, and resettlement in a new country. He was a kind and caring man, a dedicated worker, and a loyal friend, family member, and neighbour, always ready to lend a helping hand. He was a man of few words but his sense of humor brought joy to those around him. A true fighter, he faced adversity with unwavering determination. Above all, Valentins cherished his family and the life he built with Mara. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered in our hearts.

A very special couple to live beside even if for a short time. Your parents support and strength helped me through a very rough time in my life. Never will be forgotten.
