In memory of

Timothy Henry Reid

December 31, 1943 -  June 4, 2022

On the 4th of June, 2022, Tim passed from the scrum up to the great rugby pitch in the sky leaving in the stands his wife Patricia, children Anthony (Amber), Emma (Tupper) and Toby, younger brother Peter (Sharon) and seven wonderful grandchildren; Travis, Pippa, Brielle, Janaiya, Sophie, Wesley and Kohlson.

Born in 1943, towards the end of WW II, in Port Said, Egypt, the son of an engineer in the 9th Gurkhas and a military nurse, Tim was no stranger to adventure. He grew up after the war on Beesakopie tea estate, which his father managed, in Assam, India. His mother, meanwhile, was occupied with the management of a prize-winning cow by the name of Lulubell. As was customary with children of ex-pats at the time Tim and his younger brother attended boarding schools in the UK ending their education at Campbell College
in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Trips to and from India were fascinating for Tim where he gained an appreciation of peoples’ life histories and shared with his family exciting fishing and camping trips along the Brahmaputra. At school he played a myriad of sports, applied himself to (some of) his studies, participated in cadets and discovered one of themajor loves of his life, the game of rugby.

Following his schooling in 1963, Tim worked in London and then Colombo, Sri Lanka, as a tea taster. Weekends were spent on the rugby field or in the seat of his Norton 500. It’s possible he set a land speed record on his trusty motor bike though we understand records were not kept for those riding in flip flops. After several years in Colombo he returned to England and in 1967 emigrated to the Great White North.

Shortly after arriving, at a party in Toronto, he met THE love of his life. While rather unremarkable with his first impression, according to sources, Tim persisted with reckless charm and adventurous plans culminating in his marriage to Patricia in September of 1968.

After ten years or so working in the commodity food business in Montreal and Toronto Tim decided to hang out his own shingle and set up a brokerage company where he specialized in ground nuts. At one point the family believe he was considered ‘Canada’s top nut’ but, again, this cannot be confirmed. Tim loved the game of ice-hockey though barely able to stand up on skates himself, and after years of watching his sons on the ice he went on to sponsor ‘Peanut Power’ at North Toronto hockey arena.

A loyal family man who brought his love of sports to each of his three children, he could often be heard telling young people he just met “You should play rugby!” He enthusiastically encouraged his family into biking, sea kayaking, skiing and sailing adventures in Cuba, the Virgin Islands, Costa Rica, Belize, Italy to mention a few. He loved being in action and was a dedicated runner, later cyclist, while keeping up with regular squash, tennis and golf games.

Always there for a chat and a beer, he loved to meet people and hear their stories and most of all to share a laugh. To those of us who knew him he will be dearly missed. A much loved husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.

A Celebration of Tim's Life will be held at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre (375 Mount Pleasant Rd. Toronto) on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at 3:15 pm followed by refreshments. Please join us at the Funeral Centre by entering through the east gates off of Mount Pleasant Rd. and following the signs that point to the Funeral Centre.
