In Loving Memory of Tijani (TJ) Patrick Chase-Dunawa
With heavy hearts, we share the profound sadness of losing Tijani (TJ) Patrick Chase-Dunawa, who passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at the age of 33. TJ loved and lived with immense courage, and though we are heartbroken by this loss, we hold onto the joy, love, and light he brought into our lives.
Born on April 28, 1991, in Toronto, TJ was a bright child who grew up surrounded by a loving family. He attended Gateway Public School, Valley Park Middle School, and later Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute. At the age of eight, TJ discovered his passion for football. He would go on to play for the Metro Toronto Wildcats and the Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute Cougars. Even from the early days, TJ’s talent on the field was undeniable, and he quickly excelled, playing various positions with skill and determination.
A true scholar, TJ had an insatiable curiosity and a deep love for science. He pursued his dreams at Queen’s University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biology in 2016.
TJ’s athletic prowess was equally remarkable as he played throughout his university career. As a member of the Queen’s University football team, he played with heart and soul, contributing to their Vanier Cup victory during his rookie season in 2009. TJ's talent and hard work earned him the prestigious title of Canadian Interuniversity Sport football All-Canadian in 2012 and 2013, a testament to his extraordinary abilities and unwavering commitment.
But beyond his achievements, TJ’s greatest joy came on June 21, 2015, when he became a father to his beloved son, Myles. TJ's love for Myles was boundless, and being a father brought him immense pride and happiness. In 2017, TJ, his partner, and their young son embarked on a new adventure, moving to Thailand, where TJ found fulfillment in teaching Grades 4-6 Math at Lertlah Kanchanapisek, a private school. His journey in education continued in Indonesia at Singapore School Medan, where he touched the lives of many students with his kindness and wisdom.
In November 2020, TJ returned to Canada. Driven by a desire to explore new challenges, he pursued a career in deep-water diving, earning his Underwater Skills certification from Seneca in August 2022. Though his career in diving was brief, it was a reflection of TJ’s adventurous spirit and relentless pursuit of his passions.
TJ was a man of many talents, from his love of travel to his skillful guitar playing. His love of football never faded and TJ took the opportunity to volunteer as a coach on numerous occasions. He had a vibrant personality, infectious humor, and a smile that could light up any room. His friends and family will forever cherish the memories of his warmth, his laughter, and the brilliance that defined his life.
TJ leaves behind his beloved son Myles, his siblings Quincy, Umara, and Jamila, his devoted parents Patrick and Beverley, his cherished grandmother Marie, and a large extended family of uncles, aunts, and cousins who loved him dearly.
Though TJ’s time with us was far too short, his impact on our lives was profound. We will miss him more than words can express, but we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
