In memory of

Terry John Patrick Spratt

September 12, 1937 -  December 24, 2024

Terry John Patrick Spratt, beloved Dad, Brother, Grampa, Uncle, cousin, friend, mentor, and teacher, passed away peacefully on December 24th, leaving behind a legacy of love, and countless lives touched by his unassuming wisdom and kindness.

A man who “never met a stranger,” Terry had the rare ability to connect with all people in a way that made them feel truly heard and understood. His influence and friendships span decades and continents, bound together by his sage intellect, genuine care and a steadfast presence.

Terry’s wisdom, free from judgment and overflowing with compassion, was shared with many, and whether through deep conversations over a cup of coffee (or five) or quick moments of encouragement, he offered unconditional support and sage advice to help navigate life’s challenges.

As a teacher, Terry’s influence extended far beyond the classroom. He spent most of his professional career as a high school English teacher at Richview Collegiate in Toronto, where his passion for education inspired countless students to embrace their strengths and find their unique paths. His words and insights became lasting references for those fortunate enough to learn from him.

Terry’s life was multifaceted, with entrepreneurial adventures that reflected his bold and curious spirit. From running a donut shop in Australia to a brief stint as an actor, and later owning a café in Toronto, he pursued his interests with enthusiasm and creativity.

A beloved member of the Bahá'í community, Terry was renowned for his clear and compelling talks and firesides, sharing profound spiritual insights with humility and grace. His contributions enriched the lives of many who sought knowledge and clarity in their independent investigation of truth.

Terry leaves a legacy of love for his sister, Joanne; his children Kelly (Robert) and Darren (Chosa); grandchildren Taylor, Ella, Vaughan, Charlie Terry, and Aidan; mother of his children Cair; sisters Sheila (Peter) and Val (Alan); nieces Lorraine (Peter), Ginny (Colin), Debbie (Simon), Kimberly (Kevin), Christine (Ryan), and Stephanie; nephew Sean; former spouse Shahla and her sons, Anis and Erfan; and the countless family and friends whose lives he touched.

He is preceded in death by his brothers, Peter and Kevin, and his parents, Peter and Mary.

While we grieve this earthly loss, we find solace in the Bahá'í belief that the soul continues its eternal journey. In the words of Bahá’u’lláh: "I have made death a messenger of joy to thee. Wherefore dost thou grieve?"

Our hearts are uplifted by the knowledge that Terry has taken a "forward step" in his eternal journey. As Shoghi Effendi reminds us: "Man is destined by God to undergo a spiritual development that extends throughout eternity. His life upon this earth is only the first stage of that development... We term it death only because of our short-sightedness. A more proper term would be ‘a more abundant life.’"

Let us gather to celebrate the abundant life Terry lived and the spiritual path he now continues.

This gathering will be an opportunity to come together in a spirit of prayer, unity, and remembrance as we honour Terry’s contributions to our lives and our community.

The service will be live streamed on YouTube:

I still remember the day I met you in Scarborough when I arrived in Canada in 1982. I loved listening to your beautiful speeches and kind conversation. May the Greatest Holy Leaf bless you.
