In memory of

Taras Shipowick

January 24, 1952 -  February 14, 2024

SHIPOWICK, TARAS (TERRANCE) January 24, 1952, to February 14, 2024. A natural singer and dancer, with the early-in-life tenacity to even recreate his own given name to Taras (just to add some flair to any entrance), this natural choreographer began his incredible journey at Muskoka’s Summer Stock and never looked back. He went on to found Showmakers Inc. that designed, staged, produced, and directed scores of spectacular events over his lifetime, that brought joy to countless people. Whether you attended a Brazilian Ball, the Metro International Caravan, a legendary Mary Kay corporate celebration, or a concert by the Nylons (a band he helped with their early success), he turned his love for theatre and people into magical experiences and vivid memories for audiences of every type, everywhere. Even Queen Elizabeth II greeted him backstage with an open hand and a smile after he directed her Silver Jubilee gala in Ottawa. Whether welcoming newcomers to Toronto and creating exciting ways for presenting their unique cultures and customs, travelling to Europe and beyond to share his talents and engaging character, or just taking a rare wind down from that whirlwind life at the cottage on Lake Couchiching, it’s only fitting that this humble, generous, caring, and loving soul who helped, inspired, and was dearly loved in return so heartily by so many, dropped his final curtain on Valentine’s Day. Taras will be dearly missed by his spouse and partner of 47 years, Pearse Murray, and by the many who experienced the love, friendship, and entertainment he brought to their lives. He is survived by his brother Wesley (Lesia) and sister Donna (Patrick).

Final resting place is at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre. Visitation at 375 Mount Pleasant Road Toronto on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 from 10:00 am with a service at 11:00 am followed by reception at 12:00 noon.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the following charities:
- St. Volodymyr Institute (620 Spadina Avenue, Toronto)

I will remember his engaging smile and wonderful kind manner. Will miss taking him in the boat and celebrating his birthday 6 months after the actual January one as we always celebrated Pearses but Tara’s got cheated out of a Grays Bay celebration.
He was so well looked after by Pearse but also Ben who treated him like his best friend. He would bring him down to my place by the lake and enjoy the peaceful setting.
You were a pleasure to know.

I am so sorry for your loss Pearse and to so many who were acquainted with him. If anything, with the way the world is today, God could sure use a new choreographer and I’ll bet he’s already on the job. Thank you Taras for making the world a better place for so many of us.

Taras is gone and the world is a little less bright at his passing. What a fabulous man he was, and still is, in our memories. Irreplaceable and unforgettable, he always made whatever it was better. Peace my friend, I hope that somewhere you're dancing.
With much love, Alayne and Malcolm
