In memory of

Susan Smith

January 26, 1959 -  July 13, 2020

While out on a walk with her husband Daniel and her dog Abigail, Susan collapsed suddenly and was taken to Mackenzie Hospital on July 12th, 2020. She never regained consciousness. Susan passed away the next day at the age of 61. She will be forever remembered and mourned by her husband Daniel, her mother Flora, and her brother John. Susan was also the loving mother of three dogs, Abigail, Jenni, and Missy, all of whom will always wonder where their mommy went.

Susan suffered greatly for decades with chronic migraine and other ailments. Despite this she created a Facebook group to help those in pain. Through this, she brought together many sufferers and helped them through their pain and the effects it had on their lives. The group now has over 1,500 members and helped connect Susan to cousins and other relatives in places like Scotland and New Zealand. Those relatives will also forever miss Susan's presence.

Susan was a talented artist and spent many years working as a graphic designer, most recently at IBM in Markham, Ontario. While at IBM she spearheaded what was called the International Butterfly Migration project, or IBMp. The idea was to create suitable habitats on IBM properties along the path of the Monarch butterfly migration every year, ensuring in some small way that they had a safe place to land on their journey.

Susan was also an extremely creative fine artist, having painted in the past, and more recently developed her own style of wire and bead art. She created necklaces, baskets, abstract shapes, pendants, etc. entirely by hand. They are all beautiful one of a kind pieces of art.

Susan was an avid gardener and environmentalist and would spend hours in a day tending her gardens and talking to the bees and the birds. This was when she was at her happiest.

Susan will be missed the most by her husband Daniel, with whom she spent 26 years doing everything together. He is utterly heartbroken and will never ever be the same person he was.

I met Susan in 2015 the day after Jenni went missing, besides our love of animals we also shared the pain of migraines. Over the past 5 years she has been a support to me in everything/anything animal related and of course our migraines...I still look for her morning post...she is dearly missed

Of all the memories I hold in my heart, you and Bonnie are the strongest.
Our bond between us came full circle with Bonnie's snow faces, her romps in lakes, and our laughter over both your antics together.
I'll miss you dear Susan. I'll miss the adventures you had with all your furbabies and Daniel.
My only comfort is knowing Bonnie and Fergus met you on your journey home. I can only imagine the reunion. I'll miss you so much. Everytime I see a bee, I'll think of you my friend.
Until we meet, much love, Fay♡

Susan and I became fast friends while working together at IBM. Her creativity and intelligence knew no bounds...neither did her attentiveness to friends even as she endured numerous health problems. Her love for her husband Daniel, her furbabies, the environment, and other chronic pain sufferers was nothing short of inspiring. You will be missed every day, Susan. xoxo
