On the morning of February 6, 2025, Subhash Chander, 83, passed away peacefully at Michael Garron Hospital with his family lovingly by his side.

Subhash was born on November 1, 1941 to Shanti Devi and Roshan Lal in the city of Jhelum, India. He was the eldest of two siblings Om Choudary and the late Ashok Kumar. He graduated with a bachelor of arts in English from Punjab University. After graduating, Subhash worked as a machinist alongside his father for the National Railway of India.

Subhash married Kaushalya Devi on January 20th, 1971 and shortly after, immigrated to Toronto, Ontario with a group of close friends - many of whom are still his friends today. It was in Toronto that he began to build a career as a purchasing manager in the metal extrusion and die casting manufacturing industry where he was known for his expertise, excellent work ethic and collegial nature. Once established in his new home, Subhash would eventually move his wife, Kaushalya and daughter, Alka, to Canada where they would welcome their son Vivek (Rick).

Subhash was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who cherished large family gatherings—especially those filled with good food, good drinks, and the laughter of loved ones. He eagerly welcomed visits from his grandkids and had a natural gift for making friends wherever he went. Determined to connect with people from all walks of life, he made it his lifelong mission to learn how to say “hello” in every language.
In his east Toronto neighborhood, he knew everyone and was affectionately dubbed the “mayor” by his neighbors. Clever, resourceful, and brimming with knowledge from a lifetime of experiences, he had an uncanny ability to fix or build anything. He also had a deep love for word games and could often be found on his porch, engrossed in the daily word jumble puzzle from the local newspaper, playfully challenging his children—more often than not, solving it faster than they could.

And something many may not know—Subhash had a brief but memorable stint in the film industry, stepping in as a stand-in for the lead actor in the movie Sam & Me.

Subhash is survived by his devoted wife Kaushalya; his children, daughter Alka Graham and her husband Chris, and his son, Rick Chander and his wife Christine; his grandchildren, Dhiren, Jackson, Miranda and Madeleine; and his brother Om Choudary (Usha). He was preceded in death by his father, Roshan Lal and mother, Shanti Devi, and by his beloved younger brother, Ashok Kumar.

While we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the remarkable life he lived and the countless lives he touched along the way. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

We would like to express our deepest thanks to the dedicated and loving staff at Michael Garron Hospital for their compassionate care during Subhash's final days.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the United Way Greater Toronto, The Scott Mission, Yonge Street Mission or a charity of your choice.

Please feel free to share this with any friends or family we may have missed.

Kind wishes and best regards,

Alka, Vivek, Kaushalya and family

Our deepest condolences to you and your family. Mr. Chander I'll never forget your generosity, laughter and the joy we had, when us juvenile kids hung out on your veranda talking a lot about nothing. R.I.P. knowing you've touched many lives.
