In memory of

Stephen James Squires

December 20, 1961 -  July 10, 2022

It is with deep sadness that life partner of Stephen James Squires informs family and friends of his sudden passing at home on Sunday, July 10th at 60 years of age. He is lovingly remembered and greatly missed, by Valerie, life partner of 22 years, her daughter, Valinda, and four grandchildren, Nathan, Romero, Alexander and Vallia. Stephen is predeceased by his father, James Squires of Ajax, and leaves behind his mother, Barbara, sister Lori (Joe) and brother, Scott (Janet) and their grandchildren Nikki and Stuart.

Steve and Val met in January 2000 and had been inseparable since. Steve introduced Val to the nuances of birding and his love of camping and exploration throughout Ontario. Val introduced Steve to psychedelic rock, cycling in her good knee years, but moreso, this once life long bachelor, the ways and wonders of grandparenthood, a role Steve took on enthusiastically and enjoyed immensely, whether it be inspiring a deeper curiosity of the great outdoors, the art of pumpkin carving, championing competitive Monopoly or navigating the assembly of IKEA furniture. The grandchildren will especially miss Grandpa’s incomparable “Broccoli Salad” and “Grandpa Rice”, two dishes, always requested at Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.

Steve is earnestly remembered as one of the most loved colleagues of the Operations family with the City of Markham. One of many long time friends and work colleagues shares, “He would rather remain in the shadows, watching his work be recognized once revealed to its intended audience, he was an artist. He was a gentle ‘birder’ who marveled at their colour, ease of flight. He would come to Miller on weekends and holidays to ensure his birdfeeders were full. He had an outstanding sense of humour and knew the importance of timing. He had a boyish grin, shared wonderful stories of his family and grandchildren. Without fail, he supported his colleagues at the City, lending a hand or an ear. Very soft spoken; however, he spoke with compassion and conviction.”

All traits we know to be the personification of Stephen James Squires. Steve was looking forward to retirement in mid 2023.

Stephen was quietly laid to rest in a private cremation service held July 19, 2022.

All are welcome to post photos, memories and stories here to celebrate Stephen's life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Stephen James Squires to the Toronto Foundation for Student Success at https://tfss.ca/

Dear sweet and quiet Stephen, generous of heart, tender of spirit and constant in faith. My heart aches without you; my soul cries to hear your voice again, feel your arms around me. You are in every thought I have, every place I look, every sound I hear, every word I read. I love you and miss you so very much. Yours and forever, Valerie

The world is missing a part of its sweetness and goodness now that Stephen has taken with him on his journey.
There are no words adequate to convey the depth of loss.
I love you Stephen.

From daughter Valinda R: Stephen Squires was a part of our family. He was like a father and a very good grandfather to all my children. We all loved Steve, he was always there for all of us. He was always kind-hearted and caring. I will miss him.

from grandson Alexander: I remember grandpa taking us on many adventures golfing, canoeing, camping and on hikes. We would feed the birds, I always had lots of fun spending time with grandpa, he was always funny and kind. I will miss Grandpa Steve

from granddaughter Vallia: I am happy Grandpa got to attend my grade 8 graduation this June. Grandpa always made me smile because he was always happy and funny to be around, even though I didn't spend much time with grandpa, I will always love Grandpa Steve and miss him very much.

from grandson Romero: I will miss playing board games with Grandpa Steve. I will miss going on outings with him especially the camping trips, the giant ice cream cones, BBQing at Cedar Park, going to Squires Beach to skip stones, going to his sign shop. I will miss grandpa Steve's cooking, he made the best fried rice. I will miss grandpa Steve.

from grandson Nathan: I remember Grandpa Steve taking me camping up at 6 mile lake, going to cottages, seeing new places, bird sightings and going hiking. I will miss Grandpa Steve very much, he was the best grandpa anyone can have. I will miss talking to him.

It’s so difficult to absorb you are no longer of this world. I keep thinking of us as young adults – listening to your funny laugh and all of us chanting whenever you walked into a room … Stephie old boy, old boy, old boy, old Stephie, old boy, old Steph!!!!! We made quite the song of it!
