In memory of

Stephen Anthony Barker

June 16, 1944 -  March 21, 2017

Passed away peacefully at his home in Toronto on March 21, 2017, in his 73rd year.

Steve will be deeply missed by his beloved wife Susan (née Stumpf); his daughter Roberta and her husband Dave; his sisters Sheila Whiting (Peter) and Christine Hutchings (Stephen); his brother David (Sharron); and numerous nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Paul and mother Zilda (née Cook).

Steve was born on June 16, 1944, in Picton, Ontario. He was very proud of his connection to Prince Edward County and to the Regent Theatre, which was built and operated by his grandparents, George and Ellen Cook. His days at the Regent as a boy shaped his lifelong love and deep knowledge of film and theatre.

Raised in Owen Sound, Ontario, Steve attended the Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute. He obtained his BA from Trinity College, University of Toronto, in 1968, and his LLB from Queen’s University in 1971. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1973, serving as Clerk to Justice Richard E. Holland of the Supreme Court of Ontario from 1973-4. He went on to practice law in Toronto, in Calgary, and in Hanover, ON.

From his arrival in Hanover in 1985 until his move to Toronto in 2013, Steve was a leading member of his community. He served for many years on the town’s Library Board, spearheading a successful fundraising campaign in support of the Hanover Public Library. He also served as a Councillor for the Municipality of Brockton.

Steve’s sense of humour, generosity, and engagement with the world around him will be long remembered by his family and friends. He loved to meet new people and enjoyed discussing politics, history, books, ideas, and the arts. In recent years, some of his happiest times were spent in crossing the Atlantic Ocean several times with Susan on the Queen Mary II.

Visitation will be on Tuesday March 28th at 10AM at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre. The funeral service will be at 11 AM, with interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery

Dear Susan - Selwyn and I were saddened to hear of Steve's passing. Our thoughts are with you. We have fond memories of Steve - he was warm and engaging, with a quick sense of humour. We think he knew everyone! He was passionate and his love for books, libraries, travel and the theatre was obvious. I remember that he hosted a group of us one summer at the house at Marl Lake and how much he loved to swim there. We will miss Steve but he remains in our memories. May your memories of him comfort you during this difficult time.
