In memory of

Stanislaw Matusiak

January 8, 1947 -  December 22, 2024

It is with profound sorrow that the family of Stanislaw Kazimierz Matusiak announce his sudden passing at the age of 77. Stasiu passed away on Sunday, December 22nd, 2024, after a year and half battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving wife Ewa, daughter Kasia, and her husband, his son-in-law Cesar Oliveira Costa, with the love of his family surrounding him and countless friends praying for him.

Stan will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 18 years, Ewa Matusiak; children, Katie Garcia Taylor and Kathrin (Kasia) Matusiak Costa, and step-daughters: Paulina Wasko & Anna Wasko, grandchildren, Charlie David Garcia Taylor, Trinity Carolina Matusiak Costa, Noah Emmanuel Matusiak Costa, Mateus Rafael Matusiak Costa, Tobias Lucas Matusiak Costa, Joseph Stan Matusiak Costa; and numerous other family members and friends.

Stan was predeceased by his parents, Jadwiga and Mieczyslaw Matusiak; siblings, Waldus and Yanek Matusiak. He leaves behind his brother Zenek Matusiak.

Stan was born in Krakow, Poland in 1947 to Jadwiga and Mieczyslaw Matusiak. He received a Masters from Jagiellonian University in Krakow Poland, was a teacher and then married Krystyna Matusiak in 1971. They had their first daughter Kinga Matusiak, named after one of highest regarded saints in the Catholic church in Poland, in 1976, and then immigrated to Chicago, USA in 1978 to escape Communism.

Krystyna sponsored Stan to Canada in 1982, their second daughter, Kathrin (Kasia) Matusiak was born in Winnipeg in 1983. The family moved to Toronto in the 80s and have lived in Ontario ever since. Together they sponsored family and friends to work with them in their businesses, and sister-in-law to live and begin their lives here in Canada. Stanislaw spent many years working as a business owner, specializing in pizzerias, he made an incredible pizza and never shied away from an opportunity to give and provide. He often introduced himself as “I’m Stan, the pizza man, working in a van.” His generous, warm, open, friendly, and good-hearted nature proceeds him in being truly a remarkable human being. He will be greatly missed.

Stan was a hard working business owner, entrepreneur, and family man. He was a dedicated father and travelled with his daughters and wife taking them to USA, Europe, and abroad.

Stan met Ewa Wasko in 2005 and they married in Thornhill, ON on December 25th 2006. Stan was a devoted husband, father, step-father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was a man of many talents which included travelling, cooking, gardening, reading, skiing, playing ping-pong and tennis. His interests included watching sports, discussing history, religion, and politics, playing cards, and spending time with his family, especially; his grandchildren.

Stan will be lovingly remembered by all whom knew him, as a man of Catholic faith, he believed in his children, he was a defender of life and the most vulnerable; he was an outstanding father and a devoted and faithful Catholic. Stan often challenged the status quo: he was an excellent writer, articulate speaker, brilliant intellectual and accomplished academic.

In his personal life, Stan continued to fight the battle with cancer right up until the very end. He is his daughter’s hero and will always be remembered as the one-of-a-kind, witty, brilliant, and most tender-hearted man they ever knew. Stan will be greatly missed, always remembered, and forever loved.

A brief visitation will be held on Saturday, January 4th, 2025 at 10:00 AM, at St Eugene de Mazenod Parish, 1254 Steeles Ave West, Brampton, ON L6Y 0A9, followed by Rosary and prayers at 10:30 AM, and Funeral Mass at 11 AM. Stan will be remembered by his wife, children, step-children, six grandchildren, brother, nieces, and nephews, family members, and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Stan’s name to Compassionate Community Care charity, https://www.compassionatecommunitycare.org/donate

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have shared in Stan’s life, who visited him, and supported them during this time. Please continue to pray for Stan’s soul and may God grant him Eternal rest and peace with Jesus Our Lord, Amen.

We would like to express our deepest condolences. We pray for Stasiu every day. We will be missing all the laughs, jokes, and little silly bets that Stasiu loved to make, as well as all of the political, historical debates that we always had at the breakfast table in the kitchen. We will always remember you Stasiu.

With respect Paulina and Alexis

I'll never forget driving to Florida, with my father in the front seat, passenger side, and in the middle of the night, as everyone was asleep, Stan woke up and started screaming, thinking he was driving and had fallen asleep at the wheel. He got demoted to the back of the van for the remainder of the trip during the evening rides. God bless him, he almost gave me a heart attack.

He was the life of the party. He always spoke to everyone, a true Christian - never judged anyone. Loved everyone, made a place for every person at the table. He made you laugh so hard, it was unlike anyone you'd ever met.

He was never impressed with titles and elitism, he would treat you like you were another Joe on the street, and with kindness and humility, but he didn't let titles change his behaviour. If you were a snob he could humble you in a second. He had a way with words, uncanny ability to speak life and hope into a person and figure them out. He could argue any position on any topic. Brilliant mind, unlike what we see today - noisy, arrogance, and snobbery from people who have no foundation to stand on. Stan was special, unique, brave, and bold. He was never arrogant, or boastful, he was hard working, kind, and genuine: truly rare qualities in this day and age.
