In loving memory of Sophie (Zsofia) Vermes, who passed away peacefully at the age of 93 at the Palliative Care Unit of Sunnybrook Hospital. Beloved wife of the late Dr. George Vermes, mother of Agnes (son-in-law David Basskin) and Peter (daughter-in-law Tammy Tondevold), and grandmother to Elizabeth Basskin and Lauren Vermes.

Sophie, George and Agnes emigrated to Canada from Hungary in 1956 to later establish roots in Toronto, where Peter was later born. Sophie was known for her elegance and sophistication in every aspect of her life. One of Sophie’s favourite joys was to formally entertain friends and family by preparing and serving a variety of delicious soups, entrees and desserts. She also loved attending the theatre, ballet and opera.

The family will host a visitation and service on Monday, June 3rd at the York Funeral Centre, 160 Beecroft Avenue, Toronto. Visitation at 1:00 PM with service to follow at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.
