In memory of

Sonia Unalgo Brown

April 14, 1954 -  January 11, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sonia Brown, who left this world on January 11, 2025, in Inglewood, Ontario. Born on April 14, 1954, in Jamaica, Sonia was a beacon of love and strength to all who knew her.

Sonia was predeceased by her parents, Arnold Brown and Nellie Lewis. She is survived by her cherished children, Abigail, Warren (Karen) and her adored grandchildren, Joseph, Pelia, and Theodore. She is also loved and will be deeply missed by her sister Angella (Alric) Salmon, her nephews Jermaine and Jamar, her brother Kingsworth (Janet), her brother Euell and her niece, Brianna Brown. Her fellow grandma in the Brown family, Joy Maragh, will also treasure memories of Sonia. Sonia's extended family in Jamaica and across the United States also mourn her loss and are so grateful for that last big family reunion, of Christmas 2023, where they all got to see and spend time with their dear sister, auntie, and cousin Sonia. Chazak and Midnight Darling, her mischievous “grand-kitties” (as she called them), will also miss her little check-ins about them.

Sonia's life journey took her from Jamaica to years in Montreal where her children were born, then Toronto, and then Brampton, before she settled in her beloved community of St. Thomas, Ontario. She found joy in visiting Port Stanley and sharing beach days with her grandchildren. A lover of travel, Sonia explored destinations in Florida, Cuba, Europe, and Israel. Her career spanned 35 years at the Bank of Montreal, where she excelled in various roles, including customer service, administration, and management before taking her well-earned retirement.

Sonia found peace in nature, delighting often in solo and intentional walks along paths flanked by flowers and trees near her home. Her generosity knew no bounds, as she gave joyfully to charities and those in need. She was always and persistently considering the needs of others. Sonia's faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was devoted to her church and served her Lord and her congregation in various capacities, including as a minister, prayer partner, and church volunteer. People were struck by her humility - she would often volunteer to clean the church after services or church gatherings and wasted no time in walking a glass of water up to a speaker during their sermons or messages.

Described by friends and acquaintances as incredibly kind, generous, and exceptionally strong-willed, Sonia was a beautiful woman of faith and an absolute force! Though our hearts are broken, we find solace in knowing she is with her Lord, whom she so deeply loved and was so ready to meet.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Bethell Hospice Foundation in Sonia's honour. A celebration of her life/reception will be held as per details below, and attendees are invited to wear 'a little something red,' her favorite colour, though this is not required.

Sonia’s legacy of love, strength, and faith will continue to inspire all who were so very blessed to know her.
