SOCRATES PAPADAKIS
APRIL 15, 1938 - FEBRUARY 26, 2022
ΟΙΚΟΓΕΝΕΙΑΡΧΗΣ //ee-kô-jeh-nee-ar-hees/
Greek for a person who is head of a household bearing responsibility for his family.
This is how Socrates PAPADAKIS , Husband, Father and Pappou (παππού) lived his life. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our patriarch, Socrates PAPADAKIS.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife Anna. Father to Thea and her spouse Vince Piperni, to Franzis and his spouse Teresa Palandra and his treasured title of all, Pappou, to Alexander, Vanessa, Iriana and Sokratis. He leaves behind his niece Evdokia with her husband Yiannis and children Christina and Dimitris along with his best friend and cousin Vassilis Anthoulakis with his wife Varvara and children Spiro (Martha) Yiorgos, Kostas, Christina (Andreas).
Born in Kilkis, Greece to Franzis and Theoni , Dad was the youngest of 6 six sons. Ravaged by war he grew up in poverty thirsting for a better life through education knowledge and perseverance. What he lacked in his upbringing as a child in difficult times he was determined to bring it to our family unit as a unwavering rock of support and love.
Socrates travelled on foot every day to the nearest town to attend high school where he excelled in Mathematics and Physics. After completing his military service Dad moved to Thessaloniki meeting his future father in law where he brought him home to meet his daughter. Our Dad had already made plans to travel to Toronto to start a new life as so many people of his generation did. The two stayed in contact by exchanging mail for some time.
After a difficult voyage at sea and a days long train ride he arrived in Toronto. His start was filled with hardships and obstacles but our Dad was determined to build a successful life. To achieve this he believed in the power of education. He learned English and eventually applied to University. Unfortunately the tuition fee would cost all that he saved up. Dad was accepted to George Brown College and obtained his degree in Electronic Engineering Technology. Eventually working for Quasar and Panasonic.
One night in his dream his beloved mother came to him and told him that in order to succeed in building his life he would have to build one with Anna. He returned to marry her and brought her to Canada.
Together they created a family and raised us to be fearless, independent, hard working and just. Through many years of hard work and sheer determination, with our mom by his side as wife and partner, they built a business that we are proud of today. His primary goal and focus was to always take care of his family and do his best for us. We can only hope to mirror his image for our families.
It is with a broken heart that we bid farewell to you now Dad as you will be deeply missed by all of us. Your formidable presence as Father, Husband and Pappou will always remain with us and your words of wisdom will continue to guide us. May your memory be eternal Αιωνια σου η μνήμη.
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Dr. Evan Schneider , along with his colleagues and team of the Tammy Latner Centre for Palliative care in providing the most dignified care to Socrates these last months. A very special thank you to Thandi , to our nurses, Leslie and Nigel, and to our caring PSWs Josie and Selam. We thank the guidance and care of Dr. Alexandra Christodoulou and the staff at Bridgepoint Rehabilitation Center.
