In memory of

Socrates Fountoulakis

May 1, 1938 -  April 8, 2021

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Socrates Fountoulakis on April 8, 2021. He did so peacefully under the compassionate care provided by staff at Toronto General Hospital.
Born in Neo Chorio on the island of Crete, Socrates emigrated to Canada in 1963 with little money and a lot of drive. His life was spent working hard, mainly in the textile industry, to provide for his family. This work ethic was passed down from his late mother, Maria, who raised her three sons on her own after her husband was killed in battle during WW II.

Socrates enjoyed watching soccer, (especially the Greek National Team and recordings of Greece’s Euro 2004 win), watching the news and expounding on politics. He loved to eat and cook and he certainly had a sweet tooth; he wasn’t a big fan of apples, but apple pie …now that was a different story! He lived a frugal life but was a very generous man. Socrates was at his happiest when he was around his grandchildren. They meant everything to him and he was a very loving Papou.

He was pre-deceased by his younger brother Nick and his nephew Stamatis (Nick’s son).
He is survived by his loving wife Kiriaki, his sons Stam (Brenda Schultz) and Terry (Marina Gorelik), his grandchildren Kira, Thomas and Maria, his brother Andreas, and his nieces, nephews and extended family in Canada and on Crete. He will be greatly missed. We love you Ba. We love you Papou.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to either:

(i) SickKids Foundation
(ii) The University Health Network Foundation
(iii) The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada

or a charity of your choice.

Thank you to everyone for the outpouring of love and condolences we have received. Current COVID-19 restrictions have limited our opportunity to gather and celebrate his life but we will do so in the future. A private family service will be held on Tuesday, April 20th at 10:00 am. For those who wish to view the service remotely, a livestreaming link will be available on the obituary webpage. Kindly note that the link will only become live 10 minutes before the scheduled start time.

Dear Fountoulakis family,
I am very sorry for your loss. May he Rest In Peace.
I’ve met uncle Socrates before but never got a chance to talk to him. However I just know he’s an exceptional human being, because he has raised an exceptional human being in Terry.
