In memory of

余兆恩先生 Siu Yan Yu

August 19, 1944 -  October 8, 2021

Siu Yan Yu passed away at 1:04pm on October 8, 2021 at the age of 77. Born in Guangdong, China on August 19, 1944, Siu Yan was the second eldest of 5 children to father Yuk Cheun Yu, a policeman and mother Mui Yu, a housewife.

Siu Yan grew up in Hong Kong and Taiwan before moving to Toronto, Ontario in November 1968 where he began his career in the hospitality industry as a bartender and eventually opened his first restaurant in the mid-70s. His love of food and entertaining fuelled a successful 31 year career in the restaurant business, only retiring in 2007 due to health concerns. Even after retirement, he was constantly taking care of others first, always the first to top up others’ wine glasses and filling their plates.

Siu Yan was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Tim, daughters Katherine, Ivy (Saveng) Sananikone and Wendy (Peter) Yu, grandsons Nathan and Daniel, and siblings Shirley (Tony) Seto, Cybele (the late Charles) Yeung, and Kei Yan (Renee) Yu. He was predeceased by his parents and brother Hip Yan (Ivy) Yu.

Visitation will be held on Saturday October 16, 2021 from 9am to 10am at Pine Hills Funeral Centre. Restrictions will be put in place to limit the number of visitors at any one time. A small funeral service will follow with family members only starting at 10am.
The visitation and service will be live streamed. There will be a link that you can click on at the top of this page at 9:25 am.

Dear Wendy, Peter, Nathan, Daniel and Yu Family:

We were so saddened to hear about the loss of your father, grandfather and husband. The times we saw him, either at the restaurant years ago, at wedding events or birthdays for his grandchildren, his devotion to his family was evident to all. I still remember the wonderful meal he prepared for us at his restaurant when we went as a group, and his care to ensure everyone's dietary restrictions were met. May you find comfort in the wonderful memories of him that will live on forever.
