In memory of

Shun Kum Chan

April 16, 1922 -  April 11, 2024

Mrs. Shun-Kum Chan was born in 1922, in Canton, Chaoan. Her father died when she was young and so she could not finish her schooling. She was resourceful and started working for an embroidery business. In 1943, she married Woon Yin Chan, in Chaoan. One and a half years after the birth of the first child, Yeuk Han (Roberta), was born, the family escaped Communist China, and settled in Hong Kong.

Life in a new city was not easy, but through her embroidery skill Shun-Kum subsidized the family income. During this time, Yeurk Loong, Ramee Yat-Ying, Roger Yeurk Hong, and Hazel Yeurk Yin were born. Without complaint, Shun-Kum cared for her aging mother-in law, who suffered severely for ten years until her death. Though not possessing much education, she encouraged all her children to work hard to acquire a good education. Though struggling financially, she encouraged Roberta to go to the USA to study, challenging the Chaoshan tradition that boys were more important than girls.

Woon Yin started to attend the Hong Kong Swatow Christian Church, and the first time Shun-Kum attended church, she raised her hand in tears, to accept Christ as her Saviour, then later was baptized. In 1980, the two younger siblings emigrated with their parents to Toronto, Canada, and attended Logos Baptist Church. She read her Bible daily, and was constantly inviting people to attend church, especially if their children were disobedient.

Shun-Kum worked in a Canadian factory until retirement. She was valued by her manager as a faithful, competent, and fast worker. She was highly respected by her children for her dedication and hard work in raising and providing for them.

After retirement she delighted in helping to care for her grandchildren, Joseph, Benjamin, Paul, and Vanessa. Seven years ago, her legs were weakening, and a place at Yee Hong Nursing Home became available, and she received excellent care at this home. During this time, she enjoyed coming out for family meals with her extended family. Despite the struggles, God blessed her richly over 102 years of life, and used her as a blessing for her whole family.

Shun-Kum was a faithful wife to her late husband Woon Yin (D.1996) and a dedicated mother to her late sons, Yeurk Loong (D.2017) and Roger Yeurk Hong (D.2017).

She was a beloved mother to her daughters Roberta (and Enoch), Ramee (and Michael) and Hazel (and Roy). Cherished grandmother to Joseph (and Benita), Benjamin (and Jenny), Paul, Vanessa, and Kai Chit. “Tai-pao”, great-grandmother to James, Adalyn and Samuel (Joseph) and Amelia (Benjamin).
