It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Shum Mee Lee who passed away on March 22, 2023 at Mount Sinai Hospital.
She married the late Ken Dick Lee in 1958. They lived together in Toronto for 5 years before relocating to Guelph for 35 years more, and then back finally back again to Toronto. Shum Mee is survived by three sons, and one daughter: John, Peter, Phillip, and Leanne. She is also survived by 4 grandchildren. Shum Mee was predeceased by her husband in 1987.
Shum Mee was born in Taishan, China on October 12, 1935. She was one of 4 siblings and is survived by her oldest sister. Unlike women of her generation, she worked from a young age, tirelessly, and long hours providing for her family; all while also balancing motherhood. Her extraordinary selfless sacrifice and commitment to family is a rarity in these times and can be categorized simply as a “superwomen.” Her memories with her family and friends will be forever cherished.

The interment will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Pine Hills Cemetery and Funeral Centre. Shum Mee Lee was a great mother to Johnny,Peter , Phillip and Leanne. When they ran the restaurant in Guelph , I remember she was supervising their homework in between customers . She believed in education ! She also led by example and taught her children to work hard and to always support family members . I remember visits with her in TO and how proud she was of all her grandchildren .She will be missed !

I'm deeply saddened to hear of my aunts passing. Because of distance, I did not get a chance to get to know her very well but I will always have very fond memories of her. She is a very kind and caring person. She was always concerned for my general well being and making sure that I had eaten. My thoughts are with you, John, Peter, Phillip and Leanne at this difficult time.
