Passed away the morning of May 22, 2023 at the age of 89. Shirley passed at Providence Health Care, where she had been staying for several months.
Shirley was born July 16, 1933 and was the fifth of seven children. She is pre-deceased by brothers Alvin and Jim, and sisters Dorothy, Gladys, and Nancy. Her older brother Joe (John) is her only surviving sibling.
Shirley raised her own family of 5 children with her late husband of 57 years James Ernest Farwell. Shirley leaves behind daughters Judith Ann Hunter (James) and Sharon Lynn Snow and sons James Wayne (Joan) and Jeffrey David (Mabel). Shirley is pre-deceased by daughter Susan Janice McMillan.
Shirley was the matriarch of a large, happy family. She raised her 5 kids in a small home with love, understanding and strength. She loved her 9 grandchildren and spoiled them with love and affection. The great grandchildren keep coming.
Shirley loved gardening, maybe because she grew up on a farm, or maybe despite that fact. She always had beautiful flowers and vegetables. It was a tradition to have the first rhubarb pie of the season from her garden on the May 24 weekend.
Shirley loved to travel with her husband in their later years, spending lots of time in Florida, or on cruises or senior's excursions.
Shirley will be remembered as the matriarch, but also as the central figure in the Farwell family. She loved talking to her relatives and keeping everyone up to date on all the happenings in her large and extended family.
Shirley will be sadly missed, fondly remembered, and always loved.
Flowers are welcome as are donations to Scarborough Health Network or Providence Health Care.
