In memory of

Shih Ying Leong-Hugh 梁丘素英太夫人

April 12, 1926 -  June 5, 2025

Shih Ying Leong Hugh, affectionately known as Seema, Pom Pom, Popo, Popes, and Bombay Ah Koo, passed away peacefully from old age on June 5, 2025, having reached the auspicious and deeply meaningful milestone of 100 years according to the Lunar Calendar—a personal goal of hers.

Born in Canton, China, on April 12, 1926, Shih Ying was the third child of 8 siblings to Mr. and Mrs. Chien Pin Hugh. In 1943, she married her husband, Fong-Sen Leong, and soon after, they moved to Bombay, India. There, in the bustling and communal Abubaker Mansion, she built a life surrounded by extended family and close friends. She remained in Bombay until 1984, when she and her husband immigrated to Toronto, Canada, a place she called home for the next 40 years.

Shih Ying was the beloved matriarch of a large and loving family. She had 7 children (and 6 children-in-laws), 14 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. Her love for family was boundless and she was happiest in the kitchen, preparing meals for those she cared for. A consummate host and cook, she had a gift for remembering each person’s tastes and preferences, never forgetting a compliment or a favorite dish. She delighted in being surrounded by family and friends, and preparing food – never hesitating to spoil children and grandchildren with their favourites dishes. Her personal favourite was a plate of foong mei mein and a good chicken wing—simple food that always brought her happiness.

Beyond the kitchen, Shih Ying loved both reading and writing. She was a prolific writer and a revered penpal – she had exquisite penmanship and kept in touch with friends and family both near and far through her letters. Her writing not only brought her joy, but was an act of service to others. Her penmanship was so admired that she was often enlisted as a scribe for others. Even into her later years, she continued to write notes and letters as well as keeping a diary – now a treasured keepsake for her family.

Shih Ying was also a gifted storyteller, with a flair for the dramatic. Her stories were rich with wit, drama, and humor—a testament to her intellect and, at times, her sassy personality. Popo loved a good joke.

She will be remembered for her warmth and her sense of humour – which extended far beyond her family. She was very social and found joy in every conversation and friendship whether it was with old friends or her favourite nurses at Cummer Lodge. Her life was enriched by an ever growing extended circle of friends and family.

As we celebrate her extraordinary life, we remember a woman whose century was filled with nurturing, creativity, and community.

She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished.

---

The Leong Family would also like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Cummer Lodge Long-Term Care Home for all their kindness and attention over the years.
