OBITUARY

Shelly was born May 24th, 1972, in Port of Spain, Trinidad to Shaffiena and Hector Murrell. She was the sister of Debra Ferdinand and Gregory Murrell.

She grew up in St. James, and proudly attended St Joseph Convent, Port of Spain. In 1988, aged 16, Shelly moved to Toronto with her mom Shaffiena, but her heart remained in Trinidad, reflected by the passion she always displayed for her culture.

Shelly was cherished by her family and friends, as her genuine love and affection touched so many lives. Her smile was infectious and pure. Her compassion was unmatched. The bond she shared with her mom, was clear and unbreakable. Shelly savored every moment of happiness, many of which were shared with her long-time partner Ray.

Despite the recent difficulties with her health, Shelly’s loss remains difficult to accept, having been an important part of the lives of many. But as we fondly remember her, may that beaming smile forever brighten our day. It’s that smile that will blanket the void, and it lives on through her mother, Shaffiena.

Thank you, Shelly, you are now free, we love you.

Shelly was an important part of my entire life. Not only do I share important memories with her but I learned so much from her, lessons I will hold dear to honor her as I navigate my own life.

1. Compassion - Shelly cared so much and always wanted to help and offer advice. The difficulties and pain of others she would feel as her own. She would do anything to help and offer her comfort to others. Y

2. Her smile - Yet, her smile alone was all the comfort we needed. Its hard to smile when you arent well, when things arent going your way or when there is nothing to smile about. But she showed us how to be happy, and that hapiness would then brighten our day.

Shelly came into my life at when I was just about 8 years old. Shelly and my Auntie Shaffiena lived with our family when they first came to Canada. From the moment she came into my life, I looked up to her as my vibrant, sassy, sweet and salty cousin from Trini who came to take her new digs in Canada by storm and that she did!

I loved her style and her bright lipstick! I loved how artsy she was and that she loved to draw and made the best cover page drawing of a Zebra for my African Animals project. So many songs remind me of Shell, but one stands out to me the most and it was "Buffalo Stance" by Neneh Cherry because it was Shelly who played it over and over for me and I heard a sound nothing like it before! I love that song to this day!
Shell, you helped me the MOST to get my first job out of uni at Manulife, and I remained there for 22 years! That job helped me to build the life that I currently have now. Shell, I will never forget the day I walked into your Cube at 250 Bloor and leaned at your desk and you looked up to me and said "What Baby???" as you could read my face with worry...I was pregnant with Feisal and had no clue what to do...how could I tell anyone? With her calm, she hugged me and said everything will be okay. And...it was. Thank you!!!!!!!!
I write this with tears streaming down my face because I feel like I will miss the vibrance and engaging conversation that we always had and more recently some very uplifting and encouraging convos because of the struggles in both of our lives over the past year.
We will meet again and have good laughs and love and big hugs. That comforts me when I think of losing you.
Abbs and I love you and thank you for all that you did for us along the way, the support and love your offered and your encouraging words.
I hope that you have met all of the family and you are having a swell time in heaven with them and please give my Dad a BIG HUG and hope you have a drink together. Love you so much! Rest in Paradise.

One could only be so lucky to have you in their life and I was that lucky to be your niece. But oh you were so much more, you are a child of God, a daughter, a sister, a niece, a cousin, a best friend and the most beautiful soul. You brought joy and life to the darkest, dullest and hopeless situations. Every Birthday I could count on you to sing me Happy Birthday and even did for my kids you never missed singing for them, you gave the best advice no matter what the topic, your smile and laugh couldn't be more infectious, but through our girl talks I knew how you truly felt.
You were always a fighter and you won the battle aunty, though it hurts and it breaks my heart writing this I have comfort in knowing your no longer in pain, your in heaven...with Papa dancing.
I will forever miss you 💔 I love you always ❤️

Christmas 2021 was a special Christmas to me, as that was when I first met Shelly who embraced me with her warm smiles and hugs. She fed everyone with her secret turkey recipe and the best fruit cake. As a proud Trinidadian, she also introduced homemade pastelles to me. She will be remembered fondly for her cheerfulness and genuine care for others.❤️
