In memory of

Sean Peter McDermott

May 27, 1963 -  November 23, 2023

Sean, a gentle, kind and funny man loved by his family and friends, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2023 after a long hospitalization and illness in Toronto, Canada. Predeceased by parents, Christopher (2015) and Pauline McDermott (2021). Sean was a proud, loving and devoted dad to his daughter Kate McDermott. He was the creative heart and soul of his family, especially to siblings Eugene (Miriam), Clare (Bryan RIP), Noreen (David) and Stephen (Julie). He was the uncle who made time to listen and lend a hand to his nieces and nephews - Reilly, Aidan, Lauren, Ethan and Marie.

Gregarious and fearless – Sean said, ‘yes, why not!’ to life, both the good and the challenging. Sean was a prolific songwriter and lead singer for numerous bands in Canada. Later in life, facing a chronic illness, he forged ahead with quiet, humble strength, sustained by his philosopher’s soul and keen intellect. He nurtured old friendships and forged many new ones at his beloved JCC, where he rediscovered his love of swimming. Finding ever-new forms of creative expression, Sean recently had a book of poetry published, ‘I Was Just Thinking, Poems ’20 – ‘22’, a raw, honest collection that examines tender, bittersweet memories from his childhood in Ireland and the challenges he faced later in life. To help fill the vast space left by Sean’s passing, take a moment to chat, smile and laugh with family and friends.

Cremation is being handled by The Simple Alternative, Mount Pleasant Group. Family and friends are invited to gather at a Mass of Remembrance at 10:00am on Saturday January 20th at Blessed Sacrament Parish (24 Cheritan Ave) and a Celebration of Life at 5:30pm on Sunday January 21st at the Tranzac Club (292 Brunswick Ave). Donations in Sean’s name can be made to Alcoholics Anonymous or the Toronto General Hospital Research Institute.

Sean left his beautiful daughter Kate for us to treasure for him. He left pieces of his soul for everyone in his music and poems. He gave us wonderful and funny memories to cherish now that he is no longer on this earth - a reality that is hard to take in. He was too young to leave and had still so much to offer and he wanted to live. He tried so hard and for so long to stay. He is with God and his parents now. We hope he is at peace and free from pain. You are already missed Sean. Your daughter, your brothers and sisters, aunts, and cousins and friends feel your absence and are sad. God bless, my friend.

My deepest condolences to you Clare and family. It was with much sadness of hearing of your brother’s passing. He was always so kind whenever I had the chance to speak with him. Rest In Peace. May all your hearts be at peace knowing he is now with your parents and Bryan.
