In memory of

Samuel Chan - 陳燐

October 29, 1939 -  August 10, 2025

Deacon Samuel Lun Bernard Chan went to be with our Lord on August 10, 2025 at the age of 85 after a brief illness at Scarborough General Hospital. Born in Hong Kong, Deacon Sam studied Education and became a teacher of Geography and English before he met and married Louise in 1966. A few years later, they immigrated and settled in Toronto, Canada as a young family with their son, Clement. Soon after they welcomed their 2nd son, Ambrose. In Canada, he was very proud of his work as a civil servant for the Canadian government and completed an Economics degree at York University while working full time and raising a young family. Deacon Sam later accomplished the completion of his Master of Theological Studies at Tyndale University in 2000 where he graduated alongside his dear wife.

Sam loved God and was a faithful servant at Toronto Chinese Baptist Church where he was ordained as a Deacon in 1976. After moving to Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church, he committed to teaching God’s Word and continued his role as Deacon until his recent retirement in December 2024. He had an appreciation for art, nature, music, reading and a deep love for his family, the church, and God’s Word. Deacon Sam was unwavering in faith, an encouragement to those around him and committed to serving the Lord, not only as Deacon but as Sunday School teacher, fellowship counsellor, faithful husband, loving father and doting grandfather. Deacon Sam was lovingly known for his signature laugh and cheerful smile. He will be dearly missed by his wife Louise, his children Clement and Ambrose (Michelle), his grandchildren, Sarah and Alexander, his siblings Yuk Mui (deceased), Ellen, Rosemary, David (Esther), Edith (Godfrey), Phyllis, and Peter (Virginia), his nieces and nephews Albert, Amy, Patty, Jason, Janice (Conor), William, and Cynthia, friends and brothers and sisters at Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church.

Deacon Samuel’s funeral service will take place on August 20, 2025, viewing 10:00-11:00 am; service 11:00 am-12 noon at Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church (3223 Kennedy Road, Scarborough). Light refreshments will be offered afterwards in the fellowship hall.

My family has known the Chan family since the '70s. Both Deacon and Deaconess Chan are more than just prayer warriors/couple. They reflect the love of Christ from their gentleness and warmth. It's not only about what they taught as spiritual leaders but how they invested their time and efforts to serve and care for others in the English and Cantonese-speaking areas of God's ministry. Our spiritual growth journey was their vested interest. I will remember Deacon Chan as a wise, reflective and introspective soul, and of course, infamous for his comforting smile (with similar characteristics inherited by his sons). :)

Deaconess Louise, Clement, Ambrose and family, words cannot express how much Deacon Samuel will be sorely missed. His service was a treasure to countless brothers and sisters for so long. I look forward to seeing his wonderful smile again in God's Heavenly Kingdom. <3

Thinking and praying for you all as you maneuver through this difficult period of grief. May you find comfort in the Lord's loving arms. Our heartfelt sympathies.

Rest in heavenly peace, Deacon Chan,
Wynne & David Huerta

We’ve been aching without you! This shocking news hit us like a thunderbolt—our hearts are flooded with memories, every moment, every laugh, every picture rushing back in a wave of emotion. The unforgettable times we shared with you and Louise replay in our minds like a beautiful, bittersweet melody. 💔

Until we reunite in God’s glorious paradise… this isn’t goodbye, just ‘see you later.’ 🥰✨
