ATKINSON, Ruth Marcella (nee Richardson)

Passed away peacefully at Hillsdale Estates on November 12, 2021 at the age of 79. Ruth was the loving mother of Christopher Atkinson (Kristi) and David Atkinson. Loving grandma of Carey, Erin, Renae and Jacob. Dear sister of Dorothea “Dee” Sprung (Peter). Ruth was predeceased by her parents Margaret “Meg” and Ronald Richardson, and her spouse James “Jim” Hunter. She will also be missed by many extended family and friends. She will be fondly remembered for her unique style of crochet, fashioning sought after coats using wool she spun herself. Ruth spent many hours tending her garden, filled with native plants and extending over her large yard in Tiverton. She also loved to read, kept company by her cats. The family wishes to extend her sincere gratitude to the caring, compassionate staff of Hillsdale Estates for their care and professionalism shown Ruth and her family. As per the family’s own wishes, no formal funeral services will take place at this time, a celebration of Ruth’s life is planned for spring 2022. Arrangements entrusted to THORNTON CEMETERY & FUNERAL CENTRE, 1200 Thornton Road North, Oshawa, (South of Taunton Road and off Dryden Blvd, 905-579-6787). Donations will be gratefully accepted for The Alzheimers Society of Durham Region.

I'm remembering the feisty spirit of my wonderful Aunt Ruth, and her quest to have NO lawn- only flowers. Much love and precious memories to all who are grieving her loss.

We are sorry to hear of Ruth's death, which we had expected after hearing from Chris that she had declined quickly after moving to Hillsdale. She was a feisty individual who always knew her own mind, and was able to persuade a small group of relatives and friends to help her develop the garden of her dreams. She did almost all the work, but for large rocks and patio stones she needed help, and was not shy to ask! Peter and I enjoyed "Tiverton vacations" every summer, including hikes along Lake Huron and isolated beaches. She gave Chris and David a wonderful start in life! We will always remember Ruth. With Love, Dee and Peter.
