In memory of

Russell Bernard Watson

December 21, 1932 -  July 21, 2024

Russell died peacefully on July 21 after a brief illness. Though he spent the majority of his time living a busy and active life in Scarborough, he spent his final years in Whitby surrounded by new friends.

Russ is predeceased by his wife Phyllis and son Robert. He is survived by his daughter Lynn (David), son Stuart (Yvette) and daughter-in-law Judy. He is most proud of his grandchildren, Michael, Ryan (Leeanna), Jackie (Kyle), Katherine (Zac), Maya (Jack), and Rhys (Ali). He joyfully welcomed two great grandchildren, Thomas and Christopher, to the family recently.

Russ packed a lot of life into his 91 years. Born in England, he joined the Army at 14 and travelled throughout the Middle East where he ultimately met the love of his life, Phyllis. Together, seeking greater opportunities for their son Robert and future children, they emigrated to Canada. While Russ was working hard with the City of Toronto, they established a home filled with laughter, adventure, and love. Gardening, rallying, photography, music, canoeing, and many other hobbies filled his free time. His love for the Toronto Blue Jays is well known to everyone who knows him. Once their children had established themselves, Russ and Phyllis quickly turned to their love of travel. They adventured to the far corners of the globe, celebrating different cultures and experiences, returning with wonderful stories and photographs taken by Russ. As the grandchildren arrived, Grandad/Grandpa/Gramps enjoyed them immensely, fostering his passion for the Toronto Zoo in them all.

Russell will be missed by those who were fortunate enough to know him. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Toronto Zoo would support one of Russ’s passions. A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Many thanks to the staff and friends at the Village of Taunton Mills. He enjoyed himself immensely while living there, and the exceptional care the whole team provided was greatly appreciated.

Lynn and Dave,
Our deepest condolences on the passing of your Dad. Bruce and I have fond memories of him and your mom and the wonderful times we spent in their back yard on Bow Valley. I fondly remember the first time Bruce took us flying and we went back to your parents. We also remember the wonderful sandwiches your dad made for us in the evening after a night of libations by the pool outback. I'm sure he will be greatly missed by you and the family.
