In memory of

Ruby May "Nana" McLean

November 27, 1926 -  February 24, 2025

Human lives are shaped by a rich tapestry of experiences, circumstances, and challenges that together craft our unique personalities. Ruby May McLean (Nee Virgo) was a remarkable soul whose life spanned institutions, eras, and genres, leaving a lasting impact across nearly a century. To those who knew her, she was more than just a mother, grandmother, and spiritual guide. Ruby or Nana as she was affectionately called, was a pillar of her church and community, a skilled food technician, a talented seamstress, a passionate gardener, a missionary leader, and most of all, a genuine Christian whose kindness and love bettered everyone she touched.
As the Bible reminds us in Ecclesiastes 3:1: "To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." Ruby lived through her seasons with grace and dedication:
A Time to Be Born Ruby May McLean (Nee Virgo) entered the world on November 27, 1926, in Claremont, St. Ann, Jamaica, as a precious blessing to her parents, George and Evelyn Virgo. Even in her earliest years, her love, care, and faith set the foundation for a life of purpose.
A Time to Learn and Grow Educated at Home Side Elementary School, Ruby's journey of learning began with a strong work ethic and wisdom. Her natural talents shone brightly. Whether it was her remarkable skill as a seamstress or her green thumb in gardening, she used her gifts to build a nurturing environment for her family and anyone who crossed her path.
A Time to Love and Build In 1959, Ruby married the charming Leslie McLean. Together, they built a faith-centered, joyful family of eight, with a deep love for God and their community. Despite the loss of her husband, one of her daughters, and a grandson, Ruby remained unwavering in her devotion and love.
A Time to Serve and Give Ruby was known as a woman of unshakable faith, a true prayer warrior, and a compassionate helper. Her service to God and her community knew no bounds. Whether leading ministries, working as a Bible worker, or simply beautifying her church with flowers from her own garden, Ruby's contributions reflected her commitment to making the world a better place.
A Time to Share and Nourish Ruby's kitchen was her canvas, and her love was expressed through unforgettable meals. Her macaroni and cheese, potato pudding, and other dishes left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to experience them. Her generosity extended beyond her cooking. She made sure no one left her home without food, plants, or a sense of upliftment. As her daughter Lana fondly recalls, “children in the community would repeatedly greet her until she shared a treat, knowing her heart was always open.”
Her guiding principle was: "If I can help somebody as I pass along, then my living shall not be in vain." Ruby embodied this with every act of kindness and service.
A Time to Rest on February 24, 2025, Ruby peacefully departed, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of faith, love, and selflessness. She is survived by five children and their spouses Doreen (Terrence), Oliver, Sadie, Lana (Samuel) and Leslie. One sibling Catherine, 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and countless friends and loved ones whose lives she touched.
May her soul Rest in Peace, and may her memories be a blessing to those who were privileged and fortunate to cross her path.

TRUBITE TO OUR LATE AUNTIE RUBY
FROM HER NIECES JOAN HILLS & DONNA FRANCIS

Today we gather to celebrate a life well lived. To some of us she was Ms. Mac, Nana, Sister Ruby, but to my sister Joan and I she was OUR Auntie Ruby.
My sister Joan will agree that Eslie Virgo daughters (her brother who pre-deceased her) could do NO wrong for her. We were the perfect nieces. She was our protector. At summertime we would look forward to spending most of the summer with her and our cousins in the cool hills of Claremont St. Ann, Jamaica. She spent countless hours nurturing us her nieces and her late nephew, our brother Junior. Her vibrant smile and infectious laughter endeared us to her.
Her natural ability to connect with us developed into a profound influence on us. As a teenager I remember on one of my visits to see my Auntie Ruby, she exclaimed “FAMILY IS ABOUT SHOWING UP, NOT JUST SHARING BLOOD” and that resonated with me into my adult life.
Your kindness will always be remembered and appreciated.
Even though you are not here with us physically, your spirit will always be in our hearts. We didn't lose you, heaven just gained an ANGEL. We love and miss you Auntie Ruby, THE WORLD’S BEST AUNTIE.
Fondly remembered, deeply missed. May your soul find eternal peace. Your legacy of love will endure. In memory of a life filled with love and laughter.
REST WELL OUR AUNTIE RUBY.

"Tribute to Mama Ruby

I love you, Mom.

You were a loving mother, a guiding light, and a shining star. Born in the beautiful parish of St. Ann, Claremont, Jamaica, your life was a testament to the island's vibrant spirit and warm hospitality. Your parents, Evelyn Virgo and George Virgo, instilled in you the values of love, kindness, and resilience.

I remember you in the happiest of ways, with a heart full of love and kindness. Your quiet nature belied a heart of gold, always ready to give and share what little you had. You loved to cook and bake, and your generosity knew no bounds. Your faith was a cornerstone of your life, and you always encouraged me to attend church.

Throughout your life, you inspired countless individuals with your determination, perseverance, and generosity. Your legacy extends far beyond our immediate family, touching hearts and transforming lives.

Though tears still fall, my memories of you bring a smile to my face. Your gentle spirit, your generous heart, and your loving ways continue to inspire me. You meant the world to me, Mom, and I'll carry you in my heart forever.

Rest in peace, dear Mom. May your love, light, and leadership continue to guide me on my own journey.

I love you, Mama Ruby."

Tribute to aunt ruby

In Loving Memory of my Grand Aunt Ruby

Today, we remember and honor the life of Aunt Ruby, a woman whose kindness, strength, and warmth touched so many hearts. She had a way of making everyone feel special, whether through her gentle words, her unwavering support, or the simple joy of her presence.Aunt Ruby would always be on point with manners and respect,we couldn't just say Doris like that we had to say auntie Doris. My grandmother and I would always travel from Claremont to papine with bags of food and meat for aunt ruby and uncle Leslie home,it was always delightful to see her and hear stories of her past and of course pick some jimbiling fruit that grows in the back yard.
Her wisdom and love were gifts that she shared freely, and her legacy will live on in the lives she impacted. Though she may no longer be with us in person, her spirit remains in the memories we cherish, the lessons she taught, and the love she gave so generously.
During this difficult time, we find comfort in knowing that she is at peace, reunited with loved ones who went before her. May we continue to honor her by carrying forward the kindness and love that she so effortlessly shared.
Rest in peace, to my lovely Grand Aunt Ruby. You will always be missed and forever remembered.
