Revalee Holly Davis, affectionately known as Holly, was born on May 10, 1947, in Clarendon, Jamaica. She was the beloved daughter of Mazaylin Copeland, a housewife, and George Augustus Copeland, a joiner.
Holly first arrived in Canada in 1973, driven by the hope of providing a better life for her family. In 1978, Holly returned back to Jamaica, then embarked on a journey back to Canada with her three young boys, armed with determination, resilience, and an unquenchable desire for excellence. Starting as a housekeeper for the Goodman family, who embraced her as one of their own, Holly was inspired to pursue her passion for business.
A true entrepreneur, Holly's career journey was remarkable. She started as a caregiver and housekeeper, then transitioned into real estate, and eventually became a successful restauranteur with her beloved establishment, Red Snapper, in Toronto's Little Jamaica. Her entrepreneurial spirit didn't stop there; she also owned a banquet hall, providing a space for countless celebrations and gatherings.
Holly was not only a businesswoman but also an avid traveler. Her adventures took her as far as Thailand, where she bought exquisite fabric, made clothes, and brought them back to Toronto to sell, showcasing her flair for creativity and business acumen.
During the 1980s, she transformed her love for authentic Jamaican cuisine into reality with Red Snapper restaurant. With the slogan "Not just another fish in the sea!" Holly's restaurant became a beloved destination for patrons seeking delicious dishes like Ackee and Salt-fish, Oxtail, and the iconic Red Snapper.
Holly's commitment to sourcing fresh ingredients from Kensington Market and her belief in crafting each dish with love made every customer moment special. Her dining room, with its pink accents and light gray floors, remains a cherished memory for many. Holly's unique trust in her customers to return and clear their tabs if they couldn't pay immediately demonstrated her deep understanding of loyalty and community.
Holly's life and legacy are a testament to her extraordinary ability to make everyone feel at home, turning her restaurant into an extension of her caring nature. She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and dedication to excellence.
She is survived by her children, Edwin, Maurice, Tania, and Karen; her siblings, Jenny, Delva, Lorene, Marlene, Fitzroy, and Errol; her grandchildren, Keirston, Alisha, and Serena; countless nieces and nephews; and countless other individuals who held her dear.
