In memory of

Raphaelita Walker (nee McLean)

December 12, 1926 -  February 14, 2017

Passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 14, 2017 at her home in Toronto, Canada, two months after celebrating her 90th birthday. Beloved wife of Gifford Walker and loving mother to Olivia Grange-Walker and Denzil Walker, and many adopted children. She was also a grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother aunt and grand-aunt to many. Affectionately called Aunt Raph, she was a foundation member of the Jamaican Canadian Association, and a lifetime member of PACE Canada - Project for Advancement of Childhood Education – that supports basic schools in Jamaica and Toronto. She remained active in both organizations until her passing. Mrs. Walker has been a recipient of several awards including the Prime Minister of Jamaica's medal of appreciation for excellence and the 2013 African Canadian Achievement Awards of Excellence (ACAA). Raphaelita and her husband Gifford were the first Black Santa and Mrs. Claus in the Greater Toronto area — a role they played for over 40 years. She was known for ending each conversation with “love you” and true to those words, she said ‘good bye’ on Valentine’s Day. Scheduled activities in her honor:

March 2, 2017 at 7:00pm JCA Community Tribute – Jamaican Canadian Centre, 995 Arrow Road, Toronto ON (Hwy 400/Finch).

March 3, 2017 at 2:30pm – 5pm & 7pm – 9pm visitation – Immanuel Baptist Church, 1100 Finch Avenue E, (at Don Mills) Toronto.

March 4, 2017 viewing at 10 am and funeral services to follow at 11am at RevivalTime Tabernacle – 4340 Dufferin Street, Toronto, ON. (south of Finch Avenue). Interment at York Cemetery, 160 Beecroft Road, North York. Reception follows at the Jamaican Canadian Centre, 995 Arrow Road, Toronto
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Raphaelita Walker Care Foundation.

It is really heart wrenching to see you go. You will be missed always and forever.

Shining Star by Anon

The angels looked down from heaven one night
They searched for miles afar,
And deep within the distance
They could see a shining star.

They knew that very instant
That the star was theirs to gain,
So they took you up to heaven
Forever to remain.

Look down on us from heaven
Keep us free from hurt and pain,
You'll always be within our hearts
Until we meet again.

You have left a mandate behind through your work and the way you lived your life, that is as daunting as it is inspiring. Because of the way you lived your life, the doors you have opened, the changes you have brought to our community and lives and the grace with which you did it, you Raphaelita... my second mother, inspiration and mentor have set for me and others a path worth journeying and one that we can only hope to trod with your dignity and grace. To say that you will be missed is an understatement, to say that you will be emulated is a given, to say that you are in a better place is what is hoped for and expected. You have carried me this far and I will make you proud as I continue down the path that you have paved. I am comforted with the knowledge that while you are no longer beside me, you are above watching over me...Thank you mother.

We danced, we danced,
We danced the Blues in Brixton,
We jumped the Boogie
And whined the Blues
And danced the Blues in Brixton.
We jumped the Boogie
And whined the Blues,
We jumped the Boogie
And whined the Blues.
We jumped the Boogie
And whined the Blues,
And danced the Blues in Brixton.

Dance on sweet angel, dance on in Heaven. We are blessed to have known you. Thanks for your kindness and help when we needed it most. Gone but will never be forgotten. Condolences to Gifford and Babsy and Lex as well as other family and friends. May your soul rest in eternal peace. We will always love you.
