In memory of

Ranga Robinson

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Ranga Robinson on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, in Toronto, Ontario. Ranga was born in Madras (now Chennai), India. She was a trailblazer, traveling halfway across the world to further her education. She earned her doctorate (PhD) in organic chemistry and completed post-doctoral fellowship training at the University of Maine and the University of Michigan. While studying in Buffalo, New York, Ranga met the love of her life, Trevor, who had immigrated from Jamaica. In 1966, Ranga and Trevor were married.

Ranga was a brilliant scientist with a sharp intellect, directing research programs in several departments at the University of Toronto. She was a beloved mentor, friend, and role model to many. For over 50 years, Ranga and Trevor remained inseparable until Trevor’s passing in 2016. Ranga was the loving mother of Lisa (John) and Rohan (Sylvie) and the proud grandmother of David, Laurel and Kate. Her life was devoted selflessly to her family for over five decades.

At Ranga’s request, there will be no funeral. Details on a Celebration of Ranga’s Life will be forthcoming. If desired, donations to the St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.

Ranga was a remarkable lady—brilliant, kind, and deeply devoted to those around her. Her legacy as a scientist, mentor, and mother will live on in all whose lives she touched. I feel privileged to have known her and Trevor. Both of them have been so kind to me since I first arrived in Toronto. May her memory continue to inspire us all.

Good morning,

I was very sad to hear that Ranga had passed away. I first met Trevor in 1969 when I was a nursing student at SMH and then off course shortly after that met Ranga. They were both such beautiful people and truly devoted to each other.

For all the time I was a nurse at SMH in Cardiology I worked with both and always cherished the relationship we had.

The world will be a sadder place without both of them. My condolences to the family.

Regards

Sharon
