In memory of
Phyliss "Diana" Richelle Andrews
September 30, 1960 -
January 30, 2023
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Phyliss ‘Diana’ Richelle Andrews in her 63rd year on January 30, 2023. Diana was a dedicated advocate of social justice and spent her teaching career supporting civil rights. Her efforts include leading the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Toronto’s first Equity Library and spearheading the development of its Conflict of Interest Policy. While she was an elected officer of her local Toronto teachers union, she helped to establish on-site childcare for activist teachers. Diana also remained an active member of social advocacy committees, such as the Elementary Teachers of Toronto (ETT) Anti-Racist, Equity and Social Justice and Indigenous committees. She was also on the board of directors for Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC).
Diana was predeceased by her father Edwards Andrews, and her brother Jason. She leaves behind her mother, Phyliss, and her siblings, Shelley, Carol, Noel, Timothy and Holly. Many fond memories were made with Diana over her teaching profession, lifesaving and political endeavours.
Diana began her teaching career in the TDSB as a French Immersion teacher at Lawrence Heights Public School. She then taught at Cosburn Middle School, Dewson Street Junior Public School and Hawthorne II Bilingual Alternative Junior School.
Diana cherished her multiracial heritage, and had a specific interest in anti-racism advocacy. A highlight of her life was when her leadership as the Etobicoke North NDP candidate garnered the party its best voting results to date in the federal election of 2011. Her personal and professional careers were very diverse: she was an educator, activist, National Lifesaving Society Instructor/examiner, Masters champion swimmer, African drummer, Toronto Raptors fan and political champion. She will be remembered for her activism, intelligence, bilingualism, and her resolute commitment to societal change for the betterment of the oppressed and underprivileged. Diana will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. A memorial service with family and friends will be held at Pine Hills Cemetery on Saturday, February 11th, at 11:00 AM. with visitation 1 hour prior from 10-11am. Kindly email pinehillsfcinfo@mountpleasantgroup.com to confirm your attendance.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Diana Andrews to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
