In memory of

Photis Philos

August 6, 1946 -  August 31, 2023

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Photis Philos (Filargyropoulos), beloved husband and father. Born in Thessaloniki, Greece on August 6, 1946, he grew up in the Athenian suburb of Vyronas where times were difficult but the carefree camaraderie with the neighbourhood kids resulted in 70+ years of friendships. Friendship was important to Photis, which is why soon after immigrating to Toronto he changed his last name to Philos (meaning friend in Greek). The Leaside community will remember him for his 35 year career as the owner of Bell Jewellers, where he earned the nickname “the Mayor of Bayview”. Every customer was his friend. He passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on August 31, 2023. He leaves behind his wife of 47 years Georgia, daughters Theodora (Robert), Eleni (Babis) and Evangelia (Howard), his sister Marina (George), nieces and countless friends in Canada, Greece and the USA. May his memory be eternal.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Toronto Leaside Rotary Foundation (Toronto Leaside Rotary Foundation and sent to: c/o Mr. Bill Fitz, 112 Reeve Drive, Markham ON L3P 6C7), Canadian Cancer Society or New Visions Toronto (link on Make a Donation section of this page).

We only got to meet Theo’s father once but he seemed a sweet and kind man. Deepest condolences to the family during this incredibly difficult time. May he rest in eternal light. Much love to all of you.

Of my many customers in the retail jewellery business Photis was my all-time favourite! It took me a while to understand and appreciate that his bark was worse than his bite.
It was always a pleasure to work with Photis when I was selling our beautiful line of sterling silver jewellery. After the first time I introduced Photis to bagels from What-a-bagel he wouldn't let me walk into his store unless I had 1/2 dozen of fresh bagels. It was always the highlight of my day working with such a gentleman and truly a beautiful person! Rest in peace Photis!

My sincere condolences to the family. I knew Photis through the dental office which is across from where his jewellery store was. I purchased some pieces of jewellery from him and he quickly gained my trust. Photis was such a nice man and will never be forgotten.❤️

We will miss you, your big personality and laughter. So many wonderful childhood memories..the Leaf games on Saturday nights on Nipigon Ave., visits to Bell Jewellers and the house on Archerhill, the long farewells in the driveway that left Sandy and I sleeping in the car many times. Our love of all things yellow that we shared. You were my mother's beloved brother and a good friend to my father from childhood. Rest in peace, my deepest sympathies to you all! Love Doris Andy, Angelina and Paul xo
