In memory of

Peter Man Ting Lau

May 17, 1947 -  September 30, 2022

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Man Ting Lau, after valiantly contending with a series of strokes.

A much beloved husband, Ba Ba (father), brother, uncle and friend, Peter brought humour, joy and light to those around him. Full of life, mischievousness, and zest, he was unconventional and always appeared to achieve the impossible with great panache. He had an incredible passion for life coupled with generosity, creativity, selflessness, integrity and unrelenting faith. He loved his family and friends full heartedly and they loved him back.

Peter was born in Hong Kong as the doted baby of the Lau family, and later attended universities in the United States to study a Masters degree in Music Performance and a Masters degree in Pure Mathematics. Over the decade in America, Peter became an accomplished violin soloist, mathematician, equestrian and photographer, and he made many lifelong friends that he considered his family. Upon return to Hong Kong, he met his wife and worked as an executive in Education, for the Baptist University, and for the Arts Centre in Hong Kong. In 1991, Peter and his family immigrated to Toronto, Canada in pursuit of opportunities and building a life for his daughter.

As a vital part of their lives, Peter is loved and will be fondly remembered by his wife of 44 years, Charissa, and his daughter Karyn. He will be greatly missed by his siblings, David (Marina- predeceased), Sylvia (Pierre-predeceased) Yuen, Shirley (Wah Leung) Loo, Sophie (Kin Kwok) Wong, along with his nieces Maymie, Denise, and Annie.

Visitation will be held at York Cemetery and Funeral Centre (160 Beecroft Rd.) on Saturday, October 8 from 10:00am – 11:15am. A brief service will begin at 11:15am followed by a reception at 12 pm. In lieu of flowers and gifts, the family would appreciate it if you could share a special memory or message on the digital guestbook.

“Thank you for your goodwill and all the affection and attention. I feel I have won big regardless of the outcome. We are put on this earth to be instruments to one another, to do the most good. Pessimism is not an option.”
- Peter Man Ting Lau

Dear Karyn, My heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Your Baba was a true renaissance man. He has left a wonderful legacy in you shown by the challenges you take on and your achievements.

Karyn, I will always have fond memories of your Ba. From taking us ice skating, to teaching me the wonderfulness that is pepper in McDonalds Ketchup for Fries, to always having a good story or a joke to share. He always had a smile on his face. So much of him is found in you and is carried on through you. Our deepest condolences to you and your Ma during this time. With much love: Pam, Adam and Jackson Farley.

Peter became like a brother to me. I had lost my older brother two weeks before I met Peter when he first arrived in the USA. We shared so many fun times while students at MTSU plus working in two different summer camps together.

Peter was always full of spirit and mischief, and eager to try something new. He wasn't afraid to try anything, and as far as I know he succeeded in them all.

I was privileged to visit his family in Toronto, and my parents were privileged to visit them in Hong Kong. He was truly an unofficial member of my family.

My heart aches to know he has passed, but rejoices that he is now with Jesus.
