In memory of

Peter Ching-Yao Tan

November 1, 1923 -  May 3, 2021

Peter Ching-Yao Tan passed away quietly at home on May 3, 2021 in his 98th year. He liked to describe himself as a "lucky wanderer", and he had a truly remarkable life. His journey began as a 16-year old, when he left home to search for his father during the Second Sino-Japanese War. As he travelled through China, “Little Tan” completed an undergraduate degree in civil engineering. Having learned English, Peter then worked with American missionaries, before fleeing to Hong Kong, where he continued his youth ministry work while teaching primary school. A scholarship enabled him to sail to Decorah, Iowa. As a mature student and the sole Chinese, Peter quickly completed an undergraduate degree at Luther College. Subsequent travels took Peter to the University of Saskatchewan to complete a Master's degree and then to Ontario, where he met his future wife and completed his doctorate in mathematics at the University of Toronto. A dedicated mathematics professor at Carleton University, Peter also taught as a visiting professor in Tanzania. Following his wife to South America, he then lectured at the University of Guyana before retiring at the age of 80. Peter will be remembered by those who knew him for his passion for helping others and his strong Christian faith. Peter will be dearly missed by his wife Leila, daughters Denize and Mae-Yu (Blair), and his Tam and Davidson family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the North York General Hospital at www.NYGHFoundation.ca.

Dear Mae-Yu and family,
My most sincere condolences. Although I never met your father, I know from your stories and how fondly you spoke of him, what a remarkable, kind man he was. Now reading his history, it is clear what an interesting, brave and adventurous life he led. He lived well. It is what we all want to be able to say. I wish you peace as you heal form the pain of losing him. He will always live through you and in your heart. Be kind to yourself at this time. Best always, Patricia

After a friendship of almost 53 years l am thankful for the mentorship that Peter extended to me. He was a gentleman with high christian standards, a kind soul. I have been forever touched by Peter's stories, life-lessons, encouragement and wisdom. Despite his personal childhood struggles he pursued a positive life of success and love that he shared and nurtured with his wife Leila and two wonderful daughters Denise and Sicily.

I am thankful, and feel privileged to have called Peter my friend and mentor.

My condolences to Mae-Yu and all of Peter's family. I have had the privilege of working alongside Mae-Yu - I understand, through her character, what a meaningful impact her father must have made on this world.

I will always remember how concerned Mr. Peter Tan was about me, when I became ill while visiting their home in Ottawa in 1982. I also remembered the pleasant exchange we had when I visited the family in Toronto in 2016. May he rest in peace until the until the resurrection day.
