In memory of

Paul Seiju Onami

June 2, 1966 -  September 3, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Seiju Onami at the age of 58. Born in Toronto in 1966, Paul grew up in the Beach neighborhood and attended Courcelette Public School and Malvern Collegiate.

A man of many talents, Paul was an exceptional athlete, excelling in tennis, golf, and especially Kendo. He achieved the prestigious rank of 6th Dan black belt and proudly represented Canada in three world championships as a member of Team Canada.

Beyond athletics, Paul was also a gifted musician. He studied classical guitar, played the stand-up bass during his school years, drummed with the Toronto Suwa Daiko, and was known for his love for singing.

However, it was in the kitchen where Paul truly shined. His passion for food led him to become one of the finest Japanese chefs in Toronto. He honed his craft at renowned establishments such as Hiro Sushi, Masa, Nami, Centro, Nota Bene, and Chotto Matte. His culinary journey took him across the globe, from the USA and Japan to Thailand and the UAE, and most recently to the UK, where he served as the head chef at Kyoto Kitchen in Winchester for the past two years.

Paul's warmth, talent, and passion for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey.

I met Paul in High school at Malvern. He was friends with everyone. After high school, we bumped into each other and became close friends over the years.
Paul was kind, funny ,creative and the most supportive friend in the world.
Truly, one of the nicest people I have ever kn own. I am so sad that he has passed. Still trying to process it. Paul, you were one of the good ones. Rest in peace, my dear friend.

I'm so sorry to learn that Paul has passed away. I remember him as a nice young man and later reconnected with him through Facebook to share memories and update one another about our lives. It's very sad knowing that such a decent fellow has passed away at such a young age. I will always have fond memories of Paul.
