In Loving Memory of Patrick Cham-Kau Tam

Patrick Cham-Kau Tam passed away at North York General Hospital on November 4th, 2023, just 4 days shy of his 80th birthday, due to a weakened heart. Born in Canton, China, Patrick graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and later immigrated to Canada in 1968 where he completed his Masters and PhD degrees in economics at the University of Toronto. He subsequently worked as an economist for 30 years at the Ontario Ministry of Finance before retiring in 2004.
Patrick had a green thumb, taking pride in caring for his many indoor plants and beautiful outdoor gardens. He was also an avid cook, enjoyed classical music, and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle to his family. He will be remembered for his warm smile, animated conversation, energy in his step, and his earnest, dedicated, and detailed approach to tasks.
Patrick will be greatly missed by his wife of 53 years, Frances, his two daughters, Karen and Wendy, his five grandchildren, as well as his sisters, brothers and relatives.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation in memory of Patrick to either the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Sunnybrook Hospital’s Schulich Heart Program, or North York General Hospital. Please go to the “Donations” field in the upper right-hand corner of the main page.

Dear Patrick, fondly known as Ah Tam: I am so saddened at your passing so early in your tender age. I have lots of memories both through our academic and professional lives. We worked hard together, helping each other during our 5-year PhD programs. In particular, you helped me solve a complicated mathematical prgram I used in my PhD thesis. Meanwhile, I always remember that you and Frances both took great care of Gilbert, my firstborn, who was born before Karen and Wendy. During a labor day weekend more than 30 years ago, I drove from Ottawa to Toronto with my family and my mother-in-law and couldn't find any hotel to spent the night. You cheerfully hosted us after we arrived at your Willowdale abode past midnight. Always feel so thankful to you and Frances. Rest in peace, dear Ah Tam. FuMei joins me in wishing Frances, your daughters, sons -in-law and grandchildren the best of everything.
