In memory of
Nuala Johnston
February 21, 1938 -
September 23, 2020
With heavy hearts and much sadness we announce the passing of Nuala in Credit Valley Hospital after her seven month battle with cancer. She will be greatly missed by her husband Peter Stevens, her children, Patrice Gale (and David Gale), Richard Trupke (and Dagmar Pagel), step-daughter Angela Cindric, grandchildren Alexander, Conor, Roisin, Tyler, Spencer, Brooklyn and the many close friends she made throughout her joyful life. She is predeceased by her parents and her brother Jack. She is survived by her sister Carole Lorenzini (& husband Don) and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A service for family only was held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery followed by burial. A Celebration of Life is planned for a later date.
All her life Nuala was blessed with a sense of adventure and with happiness, a blessing that she shared with family members and friends alike. Of all her great adventures, the first was immigrating on her own to Canada from Northern Ireland at age 17. For her honeymoon she travelled mid-winter to live with her new husband Helmut Trupke in Moosonee. Her love of adventure and travel continued with many trips with her children and innumerable trips and cruises with Peter. Some noteworthy travels were scaling Tunisian sand dunes by jeep, cycling with friends around the Bodensee in Germany, cliff walking along the coast of Portugal and most recently cruising to Antarctica. Her only travel regret was that in her quest to visit the 26 countries beginning with the letters of the alphabet she missed destinations Q and Z.
Sailing was a very important part of her life, initially with the children and Helmut in Georgian Bay and more recently with Peter to many ports in the British Virgin Islands, the Mediterranean and around Lake Ontario, She gained the reputation of Queen of the hors d 'oeuvres since every arrival in a new port was celebrated with canapes and of course, a glass of wine. Nuala was never one to miss an opportunity to share a laugh with friends, to sing or to dance. Nuala celebrated life happily and to its fullest, a blessing that she passed on by example both to her children and to her many good friends.
