Norma was diagnosed with metastasized lung cancer on January 19, 2018 after nearly four months of excruciating back pains. On her first visit to Lakeridge Cancer Centre, she received an immediate radiation treatment to alleviate her pain. She subsequently had four more radiation treatment in the following days. Through this early period, we met and she was well cared for by the Cancer Centre clinicians.
On April 6, she was admitted to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto to remove the growing mass on her spine and screws and rods were placed to support her spine. She remained hopeful and accepting, although knowing she was in a precarious situation. She experienced many days of extremely painful periods. On numerous occasion, after normal business hours, we turned to the palliative on-call doctor for advice and assistance on the best approach to allay her pains. On June 1, 2018, feeling a sense of well-being, she attended a medical appointment to discuss her upcoming immunotherapy treatments. While at the Cancer Centre, she experienced a traumatic pain attack and was treated through the Oshawa Lakeridge Emergency Department. She was able to return home where her condition continued to deteriorate gradually with lower extremities paralysis then into unconsciousness on Sunday June 17 and remained so until she became free of pain on Monday, June 18, 8:10AM. Norma died 150 days from her diagnosis surrounded by family. In spite of her condition, she remained courageous and positive with continuous supportive efforts for those around her. Norma may have lost the battle with cancer, but she definitely won the prize for a life well lived.
She is and will be missed by all.
