In memory of

Norma Bernadette De Souza

February 26, 1945 -  January 20, 2023

Surrounded by her loved ones, the treasured matriarch of our family passed away peacefully on Friday, January 20, 2023, after a long battle with Parkinson’s and dementia. Throughout her 77 years, Bernadette De Souza never wavered from living her values – strength, love, and kindness. Bernadette was very practical and generous; she will be remembered as an amazing cook who took great pride in being around her children and grandchildren. Bernadette really enjoyed volunteering at church. She also loved music and dance and will be missed at all family gatherings where she sparkled and lit up the room with her energy.
Bernadette spent the last 5 years of her life in a long-term facility where the nursing team and the personal support workers provided amazing care to Bernadette. She leaves behind her children Karen (Ramon), Carlene (Donovan Ray), Stephen (Shalini), and Charmaine; her grandchildren Sarah, Rebecca, and Safira.
The funeral will be held at York Cemetery and Funeral Centre, 160 Beecroft Road, Toronto, on Monday, January 30, 2023, at 1:00 pm. The burial and reception will follow at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests to please consider making a donation in memory of Bernadette De Souza to Parkinson Canada.

Berna was just so full of caring and knowledge. She was a great example for her kids and grandkids. She will be missed by each one she touched. The last few years have been a struggle, and this picture aptly captures the Berna we all knew and were blessed to be around. "Ganga" May you be welcomed above with open arms. Rest in Peace.

She lived, she laughed, she loved. This is how I remember my mother-in-law. Mom was a gentle, loving and kind soul. From the moment we met, our eyes locked and I knew it was a friendship/bond that I would cherish forever.
Mom always treated me as her own daughter. We laughed, we cried, we shared stories in the utmost confidence. I learned so much from her and I can truly say that it was a GREAT honour to have known Mom and to be loved by her. Those in her presence knew they were in the company of an amazing woman, despite the many challenges she faced – you wouldn’t know it by looking at her. Mom had a bright disposition, always with a smile and with her steadfast faith in God, she persevered through it all…with grace.
When my mother passed away less than 2 years ago, Mom-Berna was not aware, the pain would have been too much to bare. My parents truly loved and appreciated Mom, along with my siblings and their families. My daughter, Safira, misses her “Meema”, but she knows that God is hugging her and keeping her safe and healthy so she can dance in the Heavens with her other grandmother, her “Nanie”.
On behalf of the Singh family, we offer our sincerest condolences to the entire De Souza family and extended family on this great loss. God be with you all during this time and may Mom/Bernadette’s soul rest in eternal peace.
