In memory of

Nicolas Angelidis

September 16, 1928 -  October 5, 2021

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our family patriarch, Nicolas (Nick) Angelidis, on October 5, 2021, in his 93rd year.
Nick was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Evangelia Angelidis, his father Sotiri, his mother Georgia, and his brothers Thanasios, Georgios and Christos.
He is survived and will be deeply missed by his daughter Eleftheria, son Tom and daughter in law Stella. Best ever Dedo to Alexandra (Somxay) and Anastasia (Sean). Loving and delighted Great-Dedo to Sarah Rose and Chloe Marie Hockin. Nick is also survived by his brother Dimitri (Helen) and his sister Mara.
Born in the mountain village of Atropos in northern Greece in 1928, Nick worked from an early age as a shepherd, a woodcutter and a farmer, doing anything he could do to help feed and support his parents and siblings. Growing up, he experienced many hardships and faced adversity and these experiences shaped the amazing man he came to be.
He met Evangelia, the love of his life, while working in the village of Skopia. At a time when arranged marriages were the norm, theirs was a love match.
In 1954, he came to Canada in search of a better life, leaving his family behind. He worked at many jobs - dishwasher, janitor, tobacco picker, construction worker and factory worker, and in two years, he had saved enough money to bring his family over to join him. Through hard work, determination and enterprise, Nick and Evangelia achieved their dream of home and business ownership. Through their example, their children and grandchildren learned the value of a good education and hard work.
Nick had a strong work ethic. Even during a long and happy retirement, he took pride in a job well done, whether it was a nicely cut lawn, the building of a sturdy railing or the best barbecued souvlaki. He enjoyed nothing more than sitting down to a good meal with his family around him, laughing and telling stories. He was a supportive and loyal friend to many and a good neighbour to all. He would help anyone in need and was generous with his time and skills.
Nick never lost his sense of wonder and his deep desire to understand as much as he could about the world around him. Denied a formal education, he was a lifelong learner. He was a tough, strong, vigorous man who was not ashamed to show love or shed a tear when listening to a favourite Macedonian folk song or when watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren with pride.
Donations in Nick's honor can be made to The Hospital for Sick Children (Sick kids).

So sorry to hear of your grandfather's death and send deepest sympathy to the whole family. He will be sorely missed. In reading his obituary, I got some idea of the person he was and was so impressed by his endurance and work ethic and the enormous challenges he faced in coming to a new country and yet, he overcame those
challenges and endured. May he rest in peace. With sincere sympathy Doreen
