It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Pui Chi WONG, announce her peaceful passing on Saturday April 2, 2022.
Born on August 24, 1932 in Toishan, Guangdong, China. She was the eldest of four children, followed by her sister and two younger brothers.
In 1949, she was married to our father, See Wong.
In the following years, Pui Chi Wong gave birth to her first child, Richard Wong in China. She then gave birth to Lai Kuan Wong in Okinawa, Japan as our father was working there as a chef on the US army base. Her third child, Lai Yin Wong was born in Hong Kong as Pui Chi lived there temporarily while See Wong continued to work in Okinawa. The family immigrated from Okinawa, Japan to Toronto, Canada in 1967. A few years later, Pui Chi, gave birth to her younger son, Gary Wong, in Toronto, Canada.
As you see, each of her children were uniquely born in different countries.
Pui Chi Wong’s life was not easy here in Canada. She worked as a seamstress until age 65, while our father worked six days a week as chef at a popular Chinese restaurant. Together, they had the strength, determination and resilience to buy a home in Riverdale and raise four children on meager wages and toiling through long hours at work.
However, her life is to be celebrated as she was filled with joy, fulfillment, and pride in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She witnessed her children complete their post-secondary education and also she saw her son graduate from law school and be called to the Bar. She saw her children getting married and giving birth. She was the matriarch of our family and she will be deeply missed.
Pui Chi Wong is survived by her children, Richard Wong, Lai Kuan Wong, Lai Yin Mathewson, and Gary Wong, five grandchildren, Christina Huang, Alexandra Huang, Justin Mathewson, Catherine Mathewson Avery Mathewson, and two great grandchildren, Shay Harkness and Sloane Harkness.
