In memory of

魏許錦屏太夫人Mrs. Portia Kam Ping Wei

December 12, 1938 -  March 2, 2023

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our beloved mother, Portia Kam Ping Wei on March 2, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. She will be sorely missed by her family.

Portia was born in Hong Kong and showed a gift for painting from a young age, becoming adept at Chinese brush painting and calligraphy. She had the opportunity to follow several famous artists, among them were: Wong Wai Cheong, Ting Yin Yung, and Lin Chien-T'ung.

Following her graduation (BA, in English Literature) from New Asia College ( later the Chinese University of Hong Kong), she pursued her BA and MA in literature at Carleton University and then received her Diploma in Education from Althouse College at the University of Western Ontario. She worked hard and sacrificed all her life to provide for her family.

On retirement, she once again pursued her passion by studying fine arts at OCAD University, fully immersing herself in painting. Her love of art was evident in everything she did. Any casual visitor received a personal tour of her prolific works of watercolour, traditional Chinese brush painting and calligraphy, landscapes, abstract art and social commentary. She was honoured to participate in many exhibitions with the Ontario Chinese Artists Association and the Chinese Art and Education Association of Canada. She also held both solo and group exhibits at many Toronto venues.

She shared her love of travel with her family, fearlessly taking them on globetrotting adventures for five decades. She is survived by her husband Philip, her children Winton (Julie), Stephanie (Rocco), and treasured grandchildren (Max, Mateo and upcoming addition Baby Wei). She will be forever cherished by her siblings, Yuk Fong, Ho Tung (May), Horace (Maggie), Alice (Louis), Elaine, Pauline, and Irene. Portia was predeceased by her parents Hui Mow Cheung and Lee Pik Yu, and two sisters Kam Heng and Kam Chun. She will be missed by her many nephews and nieces, and all members of the extended family.

Flowers can be sent to York Funeral Centre, or donations can be made in memorium to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society. Please go to the donation link on this page on the top right.

Aunt Portia was a great caregiver, mother, aunt, mentor, and role model. We are all deeply saddened by her loss but consider ourselves fortunate to have had her in our lives. Her legacy lives on through her children and grandchildren; we will always ensure her memory lives in all of us.
